Type 95 Assault Rifle II

Re: Type 95 assault rifle

I don't know where to post this question, so here goes...

Does Chinese firearm designs take logistics into consideration? I always gets the impression that Chinese firearms always favor accuracy over volume of fire, because the logistics system cannot handle large shipments of ammunition to the front line. I hypothesize this because PLA always favored SKS over AK47, and the design of Type 81 takes more cues from SKS than AK47 in order to preserve accuracy. On top of that, combat experience in Korea showed that the Chinese units typically fight for months without a single resupply of ammunition, and I believe the logistic situation in Sino-Vietnam War was not any better.

The Korean and Vietnam War era were different mindsets. I've read the reason they went with 5.8mm was to balance out the pros and cons between the AK-47 and the M-16 ammo.

Re: Type 95 assault rifle

actually another reason why they choose the 5.8 was a defensive measured becauae in case an enemy strikes china they wouldn't be able to used there ammo. and because china has a defensive stand they had to change the type of ammo they used. also i don't think logistic would be a problem since chinese factory production has increased just look at US factory before WWII and during

Yeah I saw that episode to. I don't the 97 is being used because it looks sci-fiie it might be because it doesn't look like it was made in America or Russia. Hell in SG1 there was an episode they went to a world we're the military was armed with a mixture of AK-47's and M1 Garands which was pretty obvious. I applaud them for not issue well known weapons to people that are not supposed to be from Earth.

It's kind of funny a cable tv franchise made the effort to arm it's people with Type 97's while the movie studio that's remaking Red Dawn with PLA just hand out Russian AK-74's.

The reason is simply because the AK-47 fits the stereotype of a low-tech villain army. Ironically, the Type-97 is just too modern for the PLA, which is supposed to be low tech and unsophisticated, at least in the movie.

The baddies in this case are the Lucian Alliance they have a history in the SG Tv series and have in SG1 packed earth weapons including Mp9's Mac 10's and Vector pistols now The reasons why this happens usialy in Sci fi is easy too Explain away as the concept of parallel development,( Example Alexander G Bell of the UK gets the credit for the Phone yet the same day he filed his patent another man Elisha Gray of the US filed one for the same Idea.) In there case though the Alliance have had close contact with humans and once damn well stole a Earth ship, So I think If they have Type 97's they possibly copied them off battle field pickup like Khyber Pass Copies of AK's and other Rifles and weapons only they probubly have better building facilities.
Now in Real life The Red dawn film is an American production filmed in the US where as Scfy filmed or films SG1, SGA and SGU at the same studio in Canada, Canada Allows the importation of Civilian model Chinese Firearms in numbers.
The US does not so the production company probably grabbed what they could with out having too pay special tax or paying for massively prohibitive cost of refitting another rifle too play the role. ( Shutters at the Spawn "P90" Mac 10's) they also could pass it off as a second line unit who has older inventory.

I get the the whole parallel development but there's a hundreds of AK variants like the Type 81 but don't put out the classic and most recognizable is all I'm sayin.

I don't think the producers spend that much time or money on it. They're going to give Western weapons to Western characters. Yeah the AK has been there done that. They used the Type 97 simply because it's different. No real history for them to make up because producers simply don't care about that kind of stuff. Plus nobody knows except a "few" that the Type 95/97 is Chinese. I even saw in another forum some ultra-nationalist Vietnamese mistake them thinking Vietnam designed a new bad-ass weapon for themselves until cold water was splashed on them on what they were. Thereafter they were claiming it was a rip-off the British SA80. It's new and because no one has seen it before is more why they used it. Also as Terran pointed out, Canada where SGU is filmed has gotten their hands on the import version. I believe there are laws that actually prevent anyone from importing them to the US due to controversies back in the 80s and 90s and in general over firearms. So you're not going to see an American Hollywood production with any Type 97s. The Red Dawn remake could've made rubber ones but they didn't because it was probably just cheaper to use what they had available.

Personally I'm glad China is designing their own weapons but there's still room for improvement over the 95. I think it looks like a toy in most pics. As usual foreigners with Chinese weapons make them look meaner for some reason like this of Tamil Tiger who got his hands on a Type 97.

Actually I think the real reason is being an "All American" conservative movie, Red Dawn had to be all shot and filmed in the US i.e. Detriot. Being in the USA they cannot import Chinese weapons except for shotguns (cuz its considered sporting goods). Stargate Universe is primarily filmed in Vancouver, Canada hence they are not subject to US laws.

Ya, that could be the case instead of the film's producer being still stuck in the 70s mindset. Anyway, my comment was totally out of the blue and not to be taken too seriously. :D

It is true that the Type 97 was allowed to be imported into Canada, but the Mounties changed their minds and actually confiscated them from people who had bought and registered them legitimately.

I actually agree that the rifle shouldn't be allowed, but it's retarded that they confiscated them after the fact. The whole gun registry is a national fiasco that has cost billions.
