Re: Missiles for 2208 catamaran FAC

Besides coastal defence, the FAC can act as an escort or for fire support, so unless it's conducting operations far away with other ships, there's no reason for it to be based in foreign ports like Gwadar.

Well, assuming if Pakistan even permits PLAN to base any ships in their ports, FACs could accompany other PLAN ships. Since more and more of China's oil comes from that part of the world, it's possible China may want ships out there to protect their interests and shipping lanes. Like you said, FACs can act as escorts.

On another note, anyone can explain to me why PLAN insists on huge numberings on their ships? Why would you want others to easily identify and keep count of your ships?

Interesting stuff. I personally doubt that Iran would buy this; their eyes are on bigger and better stuff as they already have better mini-FACs than this (China Cat and stealthy torpedo boats). My guess is an African state or Burma.

sorry, I missed the other part, they said they exported 10+ of these FACS to Iran. Not including weapons, each boat cost 20 million Yuan.

There must be some confusion. Iran has bought 10+ "China Cat" FACs which are clearly built by the same company (many features are identical). But the China Cats are, as the name implies, catamarans. I've not seen any hints of boats looking like the one in the picture appearing in Iran.

Maybe the text size is large because they have lousy telescopes in the PLAN. They might have settled on that size for their own benefit to make it easier to keep visual track of their own vessels.

Re: Missiles for 2208 catamaran FAC

The FACs that Iran aren't really catamarans. They just shaved down the middle of the hull, making it a twin-body. (How many things were it suppose to carry anyway? 8 YJ-7s seems ridiculous.)

Other than the superstructure, I don't see much (that are not common and not mandatory in such small hulls) similarities between the Iranian deal and this boat. (Different front, length) This boat reminds me of the old P-4 torpedo boats actually.

What navy is that flag under? Thailand?

Yeah, I've sometimes wondered if the China Cat is really a true catamaran, but either way I agree with your assessment, although I'd go as far as to say that the MG position in the front and exact superstructure closely match the China Cat, even though the hull doesn't, suggesting that they are made by the same people.

Re the flag, well spotted but wrong conclusion I'm afraid. That's the signals flag for "C". Thai flag has same colours in reverse. Can't make out the other signals flags.

How come I can't see any serial number on them? Without serial numbers, we can hardly identify them that may lead to mis-count. Are they completed?
