Re: Missiles for 2208 catamaran FAC

The "China Cat" FACs were transfered to Iran in 2002 by the China Shipping and Trading Company (CSTC) in a purchase that also included HQ-7 SAMs and FL-10 ASCMs. They purchased 6 of them, each is armed with 8 FL-10 SSMs (C-701s) and 2 25mm guns.

Kamwa originally reported the sale as 10, but in the end it was 6 delivered.

The best online source regarding the sale is "Jane's Defense Weekly, Vol. 37, 16 Jan 2002," however for those who subscribe there was a 2003 or 2004 issue of Proceedings (can't remember which month) that has pictures.

Plus at least one which is not armed with SSMs and has less sensors and different side windows which would probably prevent it from having SSMs at all. Some credible sources still say 10 boats. Pictures of armed China Cat in Iranian service are virtually nonexistant on the net - if anyone has any....

There is speculation the Iranian's either have or are going to build more, but there were only 6 sold and transferred. When cited, the 10 number sources the Kamwa article which turned out to be incorrect.

SIPRI confirmed the deal at 6. Considering Kamwa doesn't have the best history for accuracy, and SIPRI has access to the intelligence gathering capability of the United Nations (it is the official arms proliferation research group for the UN) I tend to think SIPRI's information is probably more accurate.

You can actually request a hard copy of their annual yearbook of arms transfers, if you are willing to pay for it. They put a free general data yearbook online through the UN, but it doesn't have the 'good stuff' of their reports.

Just for reference, this is the unarmed one without full sensor fit and different side windows than the armed version:

I have yet to see a photo of an armed China Cat in Iranian service.

Thought to have been coastal clutter etc, and also Israeli ships were probably better equipped in terms of ECM, and C-802's software fell short. Fortunately, the YJ83 has already (or should after these experiences) improve on the C-802's short comings.
Can the C-series missile software be reprogrammed at sea or do you have to bring the ship back every time an update comes out?

Eg, Harpoon was given to the Pegasus missile hydrofoil, and why the heck would USA put Harpoon, a 66mile+ missile onto something that can't detect beyond the horizon? Cause it was for logistical reasons.
There's also a side benefit, too. The Harpoons can hit the target from multiple directions so the extra range comes in handy when you want to loop the missiles around your enemy. That way instead of a flight of Harpoons coming from one direction from a dot on the horizon, it looks like they are being attacked from four directions at the same time while the hydrofoil is speeding away.
