Re: Missiles for 2208 catamaran FAC

The U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence estimates that the
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which conducted the war games,
has as many as 1,000 boats up to 60 feet long with long-range
torpedoes and anti-ship cruise missiles, as well as five high-
speed Chinese catamarans armed with long-range missiles.

No, that quote is close to right as Iran does employ Chinese made high speed catmarans, though the number is probably closer to 10 than 5 and they are armed with short range missiles, probably C-702s. BUT, they aren't Type-022s, they are "China Cat" and at least one is not fitted for missiles at all. :coffee:

i was thinking about that, but then didn't think they qualify the long range missile statement.

That makes sense if it's not the type 022s. Would you please provide some links about the "China Cat" ?

I just had a thought that the Type 22 FAC can be modified to fit MLRS into those missile tunnels. This can be useful for bombardment of onshore defenses.

notice the window edge:

Yes, some of us had already caught on to the radar absorbing structures around the windows but it's great to see it from the inside. These deatails would not be cost-efficient if the rest of the boat's stealth wasn't to a VERY high degree hence my assessment that the Type-022 is at the stealthy end of stealth warships. :coffee:

You don't see a lot of serrated windows on ships. When I see these, I'm reminded of the B-2 and F-117, which had these.

That's exactly what these are to do with, they are called re-entrant triangles and they are a means of reducing RCS. They are often involved in some forms of Radar Absorbing Structures (RAS) - similar to those on the SR-71 all those years ago. But as the SR-71 reminds us, if you put these on an otherwise unstealthy platform they don't do that much. That is why they are a strong indicator that the Type-022 is generally VERY stealthy, as the cost-benefit of these details would be such that the manufacturer would go for normal windows.

BTW, notice how the glass goes behind the edge rather than meeting it, another radar savvy subtly.

The "China Cat" FACs were transfered to Iran in 2002 by the China Shipping and Trading Company (CSTC) in a purchase that also included HQ-7 SAMs and FL-10 ASCMs. They purchased 6 of them, each is armed with 8 FL-10 SSMs (C-701s) and 2 25mm guns.

Kamwa originally reported the sale as 10, but in the end it was 6 delivered.

The best online source regarding the sale is "Jane's Defense Weekly, Vol. 37, 16 Jan 2002," however for those who subscribe there was a 2003 or 2004 issue of Proceedings (can't remember which month) that has pictures.
