With the brown color like that, the whole ship does not even look its made of metal.

022 what was the timeframe to build the 9 ships? I was wondering how many can be built in one year.

How many of these ships would you need to be able to have more weapons on board compared to one common destroyer?

They are being built at a quick pace for sure. I think they appeared first around early 2005, but production REALLY boosted in the latter half of last year.

As to:

What do you mean? I would say never, because these are FACs, 4 of them will have enough ASMs as DDGs, but they don't have torpedoes, SAMs, or helicopters.

As for SinoForce: I think Planeman's bulge is a new feature we never noticed.

no, I shipyard alone has built 9 022s in maybe a year? There are at least 4 other shipyards that are building 022s. The truth is we don't know how many 022s there are. In terms just pure firepower, each of them can hold 8 AShM, so equivalent to a standard frigate.

What if they start to use the FAC platform to carry other weapons, let's say a torpedo boat? Or a SAM boat? A UAV boat? And they travel in packs? Sorta like a configurable "destroyer"? Obviously for short range missions due to endurance limitations.

Looking at pictures from the front, it looks like these boats have very narrow engine rooms, maybe more like engine closets, one in each hull. Wonder what the range is.

Re: Missiles for 2208 catamaran FAC

The FAC is likely to accompany the newly commissioned LPD's in amphibious assault operations. Judging by it's camouflage (not navy grey but similar to those worn by marines), it is reasonable to assume the ship will operate close to shore. Viewing it from the perspective of amphibious assault, it is easy to see that it can carry, in addition to anti-ship cruise missiles, land-attack cruise missiles for close combat support. In a way, it will be used as an escort for the LPDs as well as providing fire support against shore defences.

The engine does not appear to be located in front of the hull, but at the rear. In addition, the ship appears small in the photos, but they are actually big so don't be fool by its size. If the ship is used for escort and land-attack, it should have a range that brings it close to 300km from Taiwan within the range of its missiles. Also, its distance can be greatly extended by having on-sea refueling, similar to in-flight refueling. It's catamaran hull and on-sea refueling should allow it to have blue-water capability.

Accompanying the LPD could be a possibility. I don't know what type of sensors the LPD will carry but since the FACs have datalinks, it's conceivable the LPD can act as the "command ship".

I don't see the FACs doing really long range missions. I think Taiwan would pretty much be the extent, not unless PLAN FACs will be based out of other bases like maybe Gwadar?

Besides coastal defence, the FAC can act as an escort or for fire support, so unless it's conducting operations far away with other ships, there's no reason for it to be based in foreign ports like Gwadar.
