Instead of 40 new F-16's they should've gotten the F-15EX instead.
They can barely get their F-16s upgraded, you really think the Americans would give F-15s without too much hassle?!

In order to get said F-16s, TR had to allow in one of the major supporters of its foes to NATO. Think about that for a sec.

I hope congress votes against it and the Turks are forced to look at better alternatives.

Baykar should get the state support they need to be like SpaceX.

Having their own airfield pointed straight at the Black sea for safety purposes, letting a supersonic capable UCAV crash in the water every week, designing and producing their own turbofan engines with initially horrendous endurance, until they've settled on a workable design.

The Turks need their own Area 51/Peenemunde. They have the brains, balls and the money to do it.

$23 billion is more than the Kaan ($10B)+engine($5B)+sensors and munition(~$5B) development in its entirety.

Interesting, 952 new AIM120C8 together with the triple launchers makes an F-16 carry 8 AMRAAMS. 40+79=119 *8=952.

8 AMRAAMS for every new and upgraded F-16 it seems. With the rest of the 240 -C7's it'll be 10 AMRAAMS.

The other half of the F-16 fleet will get the Ozgur modernization and MURAD radar and the Goktug missiles.

I guess they got spooked by the amount of cheap kamikaze drones and cruise missiles being launched everywhere in the region.

With the S-400 and 1200 AMRAAMS by then (and 600 AIM9X), the two most important threats are covered:

Iranian BMs (and rogue F-16's, you never know in a polarized society as Turkiye) and kamikaze drones/CMs.

IMHO, right way to count it is still probably 3x4(with current supply), not 1x8.

Overloaded configurations are nice and can be used,as needed, but normal A2A f-16 is still 4+2.

And for all the advantages of all-domestic capability, local production is limited by (obviously) local production and economics. Turkiye is ultimately not a superpower.

US F-16 fleet can be supplied, in case of a big emergency, from endless US stocks.

Thus it's a painful pill to swallow for domestic industry, but it's still the right military decision for the current situation.

Overall I agree with what you wrote but this unexpectedly large procurement suggests that this is a "cmon man lets do this for the last time so that we won't have to deal with each other ever again" kind of deal. The scale of requested munitions shows us that TurAF thinks this is the last time they'll ever be able to procure anything large from the US so they seemingly deemed it necessary to fill the stocks for the Viper fleet as much as they can.

If you look back at the "troublesome" bilateral relations of the past 20 years, you'll realize the Americans would never supply from their own stocks in case of an emergency like it did with Israel. They might do it with Greece in case of a conflict though, they've really been trying to tip the balance recently.

----------

This is most likely the last time Turkey ever purchases fighters from them, but they still need engines (F110 & F404) for indigenous interim solutions.

Well, depends on against whom. :)

Turkiye is now certainly an unusual NATO member, but still a NATO member. And, despite excellent relations with Russia - hedge for if (when?) the latter finishes Ukraine is better to be in place; just for maintaining a healthy relationship, if anything.
