The War in the Ukraine

Some might have expired. But like I said a whole lot was exported to multiple conflicts since the collapse of the Warsaw Pact.
Afghanistan and Syria being the major ones.

Lol I knew someone will mention those two. They actually sold ammo from Albanian stockpile to Afghan government. This is notable because unlike other Warsaw Pact countries Albania is one of the very few socialist countries which went to China's side of the Sino-Soviet split, thus their big stockpile of ammo was actually made in China (and therefore illegal for these two to sell per US law).

Doubly ironic since Taliban 1.0's ammo also came from China, as back when CIA was funding them to fight the Soviets they needed ammo that would work in captured Soviet weapons (and Chinese reproduction, eg: Type 56 assault rifle, Type 69 RPG) and the countries best equipped to manufacturer that was also China, and China did and earned some sweet CIA bucks.

Basically if it wasn't because China has to remain neutral in this war you would see Norinco sales people on both sides of the conflict already. I would expect lots more business for Norinco after the war for countries that still use Soviet standard ammo, they even got the prefect sales pitch:

You see how during the Russo-Ukrainian War Russians had to fire many full salvos of BM-21 just to counterbattery three M109? Looks bad for the Russian army on Twitter doesn't it. Avoid that embarrassment and turn your old cold war era MLRS into 21st century precision strike instrument by upgrading to our Fire Dragon 40 guided 122mm rocket

Correct me if I'm wrong, but after 30 years in storage, wouldn't all that Warsaw Pact-era ammunition be way past its shelf life, and be more of a risk to the user than the target anyway? Aren't old explosives really volatile? And I doubt there was much use for manufacturing new ammunition after 2000, when everyone in NATO thought Russia to have been taken out of the equation.

Combine the equipment that has been stored in substandard conditions, ammunition that should best be sent for disposal, and the fact that even the factories which can manufacture Warsaw Pact-standard ammo have been making NATO-standard ammo for the past 20 years, and it doesn't surprise me that the stocks are gone already.

What's curious to me is that while all the artillery systems the west can send are 155mm - which could long-term replace all the 152 systems in Ukrainian service, the bulk of Ukrainian artillery is actually 122 mms - which the west has no way of replacing.
Ammunition has a longer shelf life than you might think, I've seen probably Canadians on youtube unpacking a box of 1965 Chinese made M43 rounds and still being able to fire them. If I remember correctly, someone even managed to get the T-34 to fire in the Yemen war .

My take as an armchair general and keyboard warrior is that Russia should scrap their junk aircraft carrier and put the money into more Orion drones. The battle field should be full of drones like flies in an outhouse so that the uaf get scared to even blink and if they even dare to breath wrong they get a missile up their...
