The War in the Ukraine

A bit surprised Ukraine hasn't tried to Storm Shadow the Berdyansk Airport, where the core of the Russian army aviation supporting Zaparozhye front is operating from. It may at this point Ukraine does not have enough platforms and/or missiles to conduct a successful strike. Some ATACMS would really help in this scenario.

Ukrainian infantry seem to disembark from their vehicles and hide in the tree lines to get away from the helicopters, but in exchange loose a huge amount of vehicles.

I think the Merkava is one of those tanks that like the Abrams and, until recently, the Leopard 2 owed its mythical status to a set of circumstances rather than any breakthrough tech or design choices.

It is a great tank...for Israel realities and technological level and limitations at the time, as it what was Israel could develop and afford at the time, from the engine on the front, to the rear hatch to reload it and so on. Which hasn't stopped people from memory holing how they didn't fare well in 2006, anyway and how the design hasn't won any competition despite having the same engine as the widely produced M60 and a german transmission up to the Merkava 3.

I can only imagine what will happen with a 4 month training if a 2 year one wasn't enough.
There really is no myth about Merkava. It is the western tank that get blown up the most.

The Israeli Merkava tanks are probably intended as replacements for the West (most likely central or Eastern European NATO) to send all of their old vehicles to Ukraine. Russia just announced the opening of their consular office in Jerusalem yesterday and the Israelis aren’t too keen in aggravating Russia in Syria.

On a side note, where did @SolarWarden disappear to again? Always disappears whenever Ukraine isn’t doing so hot and reappears when it is over.

ATACMS may be coming to Ukraine. The house budget bill has slated a minimum of $80 million dollars of ATACMS missiles for the Ukrainian Army. Minimum of 40-60 missiles.

It could be that maybe they can't get close enough to have the base within range without getting exposed to Russian fighter jets or air defences

Though lack of missiles is a possibility. Didn't someone mention that only like 300 Storm Shadows were ever made?

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who think the Merkava is almost as good as the M1

Or it was one of the first targets their tried, but couldn’t get through the Russian AD so are now going after softer targets.

This was just something drafted by the house armed services committee it hasn't actually been passed by Congress let alone signed by Biden

ATACMS isn't produced anymore. Any which are given to Ukraine will be unavailable to the US if they need it themselves. For example against Russia in NATO Europe proper or against China in Taiwan area. I doubt it will be delivered to Ukraine before the Precision Strike Missile enters service.

40 mm on the roof of the turret, and the turret is 3x or more times bigger than T-series tanks, seems like a nice target for civilian drone strikes with a small, vertically launched hollow charge.
Weibo is also amazed by the weakness of German tank armor.

By comparing it with the boots, it can be seen that the thickness of the armor plate may be less than 40mm.

Xi Yazhou's comment on the current situation of the War in Ukraine.
The Precision-guided munition obtained by Ukrainians from NATO largely offset the advantages of the Russian army. And the intelligence support provided by NATO has played a significant role.

However, due to material constraints, the reconnaissance capabilities of the Ukrainian army are very low, relying solely on NATO to provide coordinates for the target area. This has led to serious waste of valuable ammunition in Ukraine.
But the Russian army is very "cooperative". At present, their communication confidentiality ability is very poor. This makes it easy for Ukrainians to attack the front command post of the Russian army.

Summary: The level of informatization on both sides of the conflict is very low.
