The War in the Ukraine

Dunno why you guys underestimate the Patriot system. It has been extensively tested in Saudi Arabia against all sorts of nice toys that Iran gave to Yemen.

That Saudi Arabia is happily using it and actually requests more and more missiles from the US to stock up, says to me that for what it does, it does it well

I am sure Russia won't be as dismissive of its arrival to Ukraine as some people are

Yet somehow Shaheds get through and damage the Saudi oil fields.

The Americans neglected ground based air defences for three decades, insisting that expensive 5th generation fighter jets would handle all air defence. Let's face it, the US isn't at the cutting edge of SAM development, hasn't been for a long time.

Regardless, this is probably not the last Patriot Ukraine is going to receive. I expect them to receive a lot more, and promptly waste dozens of them against cheap Russian stuff that may or may not be decoys, and by next summer we will be talking about how the west is also running out of Patriot missiles to donate... (but not before the usual social media sites are bombarded with St. Patriot memes).

It's telling the Ukrainian side keeps pumping up wunderwaffe stories. Does anyone really believe a single Patriot battery is going to make any difference?

Russia is pumping out T-90s by the score, and the West is patting their own backs on sending equipment in the single digits.

Bingo. I've said it before and I will say it again. The west could have totally reequipped Ukraines armed forces with cold war equipment that is in storage. Thousands of M113s, M60s, M109s, TOW missiles, M16s, UH-1s and so on. They have received less than 400 M113s. My own country has way more M113s sitting in storage awaiting the scrapman along with up to 76 M109s. They are outdated, but for sure better than a Toyota Hilux.

Ukraine currently operates the Airbus Super Puma. The UK has dozens of old Pumas sitting in storage. What do they donate? 3 Sea Kings! They could source an entire fleet of Pumas and Super Pumas from retired European stocks and the civilian market in no time, and the Ukrainians could use them with minimal training!

I would not be surprised if such old stuff in storage might be in way worse shape than thought, and the repair and fix fee to get them up to shape actually being quite big and hefty.

Not to mention, the official numbers of stuff in storage might actually be higher than what is actually in storage lol.

You might be right, but on the other hand, the Ukrainians have shown they are able to scrounge stuff together from their own dilapidated stocks. If they can get rusty, rotten BRDMs working again, M113s or M109s aren't beyond their means.

That in my mind as well. Most likelly there are no spares to make them work , there is no manufacturing capacty for spares, and no workforce capable to evaluate the equipment in storage.

They have spares and even better, manufacturing capacity for them.

And the soviet stuff more matured and easier to maintain ,having more test and design in them.

What the Ukrainians need most is air control and enough tanks and vehicles. Maybe only E-3 and F-35 can help them regain the sky.
Moreover, considering the advantages of Russians, these equipment cannot be too poor, and must be able to offset the advantages of Russians.
Is it meaningful to provide a batch of old helicopters? They will be shot down soon, and Ukrainians are more inclined to use these things to launch risky attacks and win some victories with political significance greater than practical significance to gain more support.

You have also seen the amazing losses in the past 10 months, the APC of aluminum alloy armor can only provide a limited role there, and an armored battalion disappears after a shelling. You should also take into account that the Ukrainians do not consider losses at all.

NATO has thousands of decommissioned tracked infantry vehicles. M113s and even Soviet ones like the BMP and MT-LB.
They thing is a lot of them are probably in piss poor shape. The equivalent of taking them out of the graveyard.

They can compensate for the lack of spare parts by cannibalizing some of them. Out of several thousand APCs, they should be able to get at least 1000 working.
Me thinks they might be keeping them in reserve for their own use since their new super sophisticated toys will be hard to manufacture en masse in times of war.
