Wow! A ship named "big rock"...
Hehehe...well a "Rock" is something substantial to lean on and provide a foundation...and, if hollowed out enough, it can actually float, LOL!

In this case I am sure they are taking the first meaning.

These are nice AOE vessels. Displace about 21,000 tons full load. I believe this is their second such vessel and joins the AOE-530, Wu Yi.

I would have put a RAM missile launcher on them too...but since the ROCN hasn't gotten any yet, they have to make do with what they can.

If it were an ROKN vessel, it would probably have a RAM on it.

Its interesting that the Taiwanese navy have two of these AOR ships and China only have four !

Actually the PLAN has seven such vessel. For the longest time they had five. Two Fuqing (881, 882) Class, One Fusu Class (885) and two Fuchi Class (886, 887). However, more recently they have added two more, the two Type 809A Class (889, 890). Here they all are:

Where did you come by those specs, Jeff?
Wikipedia lists Sky Sword II's range as 60 km, and I'm pretty sure it is only active radar guided, no IR homing... It is a BVR missile after all, like AMRAAM. [edit: sorry, didnt' see you meant TC-2A, which supposedly has an IR seeker and a larger motor... however has anyone actually seen the missile in service? An IR seeker and larger motor should be fairly obvious]
Also, a surface launch TC II would have far less range than an airborne launched equivalent.

The 100 km quote is from the press:

The range has also been quoted as 30 km in other press articles:

If I'm reading the numbers right, the cost of the upgrade for 6 ships is 10 billion NT, or $340 million USD.

The articles also vary on the VLS or slanted launch box layout. This article claims that they will not use VLS:

Some TW articles are calling the ship based SAM "Sea Sword 2". My $0.02 is that I'll believe it when I see it.

Thanks for that.
In any case I believe the 30km range makes far more sense given my previous post, I believe the 100km range was just a case of reporting numbers for the A2A version.

I do not believe official specs have been released for the ship launched TC-2 missile. Here is an old video claimed to be a test launch of VLS TC-2:

TC-2 AAM is said to have 50-60 km range, and the anti-radiation TC-2A is said to have up to 100 km range. However the specs and operational status of TC-2A is speculative.

More Perrys coming. Wasnt there an issue with having sufficient functional Mk13 launchers when the Tien Tan was built. I vaguely recall FMC had trouble finding a Mk13 to fit in the new ship. The only Mk13s were ones taken off the US ones and some were not functional. Though given the number available you'd think spares isn't an issue.
They should put some TC2 in front of the Mk13 like the Aussies do with ESSM. And when are they going to upgrade to SM2 like the Aussies!!

The first two Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates purchased by Taiwan from the US are expected to be delivered in 2015, Navy Chief of Staff Kao Tien-chung (高天忠) said yesterday.
The two warships, which cost NT$5.2 billion (US$175 million), are to replace two Knox-class frigates, whose condition is the worst in the entire fleet, Kao said during a hearing of the Legislative Yuan’s Foreign and National Defense Committee.
The ships are part of an order of four Perry-class frigates that the US government has agreed to sell to Taiwan, he said.
On Wednesday, the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs unanimously agreed to introduce legislation that would authorize the sale of the four frigates — the USS Taylor (FFG-50), USS Gary (FFG-51), USS Carr (FFG-52) and USS Elrod (FFG-55) — to Taiwan.

The problem with general journalists talking about military matters is that they treat things as a binary proposition.

Either it's the next blitzkrieg/Manhattan Project, or it's a fifty billion dollar boondoggle like the FCS. Naturally, there is no such thing as an in between.

*turns off rant*

More Perrys coming.

The first two Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates purchased by Taiwan from the US are expected to be delivered in 2015, Navy Chief of Staff Kao Tien-chung (高天忠) said yesterday.

The ships are part of an order of four Perry-class frigates that the US government has agreed to sell to Taiwan.
Taiwan license built 8 OHP Frigates from 1990 until 2001. They were built without Harpoon missiles or their guidance.

The ROCN did have them built, however, with the Mk-13 single arm launcher with forty SM-1MR AAW missiles, with the 76mm DP gun, a single 20mm Phalanx CIWS, two triple launch torpedo tubes, and hanger space for two SH-60 sized helos, just like in US service. Instead of the Harpoon missiles, they were armed with four indegenous Hsiung Feng II (Mach 0.85, 160 km) and four indegenous Hsiung Feng III (Mach 2, 130km) anti-shipping missiles. In addition, they were given two additional 40mm Bofors cannons. They also received dala link 16.

I wonder if these new vessels will be delivered with the Mk-13 launchers (since the US Navy removed them some time ago), the 76mm gun, the Phalanx CIWS and the torpedoe tubes from the US?

The ROCN is perfectly capabe of adding everything they need, and servicing and maintaining these vessels as they already have eight of them that they built locally. A total force of twelve of them will be worthwhile and very capable...nothing to be scoffed at.

Wonder what they will do with the two Knox-class frigates that will be replaced, scrapped and spare parts salvaged? Or re-sold to another navy that the US would approve?
