Its perhabs interesting to know that Taiwan needs American permission to test fire a lot of their high tech weapons that they buy from them. That's because of the fear that China may gain valuable data from any test firing. But for the readiness of their forces don't they need test firings?

TEWKSBURY, Mass. --- The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) has successfully completed yet another series of test firings of Raytheon Company's Patriot Air and Missile Defense System at McGregor Range, N.M. The Annual Service Practice included target engagement and firings of Patriot in stressing tactical mission scenarios.

The class has a unusual heavy weapons fit for this type of vessel:
1x 76mm OTO Melara main gun
2x 20mm Phalanx CIWS
2x 35mm Rheinmetall Millenium guns
2x 30mm cannons turrets
and several .50 cal machine guns

These are nice AOE vessels. Displace about 21,000 tons full load. I believe this is their second such vessel and joins the AOE-530, Wu Yi.

I would have put a RAM missile launcher on them too...but since the ROCN hasn't gotten any yet, they have to make do with what they can.

If it were an ROKN vessel, it would probably have a RAM on it.

Don't be so quick to reject, the 214 is designed as the new German sub export boat its already been introduced into the pacific albeit, troubled for the ROK navy.

When GWB offered subs 12 years ago he was hoping one of the Euro nations would step forwards with a design. Berlin said no very early on. Madrid was next up and said no, just as well given the problems with their S80 program. UK was never in the running given only recent Upholder experience- and we can ask the Canadians how well thats doing! And given historic UK-ROC relations though at least Hong Kong isn't a factor anymore. ROC reportedely turned down offer of ex Italian Sauros but given they wouldn't even sell Otomats in the 70/80s I can't see them selling subs now! Dutch were out of running since they delivered the Hai Lungs and caved to PRC pressure. Though reportedly ROC has possession substantial part of the Hai Lung design. (You'd think someone at GD Electric Boats could turn that in to something useful)
That leaves the French, who say no, but AFAIK there is still a separate (from the now settled Thales ) active lawsuit against DCNS over the Lafayette scandal. If DCNS saw they may have to pay out substantial amounts to ROC in damages, though probably not close to the 3/4 billion$ Thales paid out. They may be willing to offer in kind compensation- like a Skorpene or Andrasta design. Talk of Tokyo providing technical help is IMHO far fetched unless PLA takes the Senkakus!!

I expect, that the only way the ROCN is going to get new SSKs at this point is to, with probably GD Electric Shipbuilding help, to build their own.
