Wonder what they will do with the two Knox-class frigates that will be replaced, scrapped and spare parts salvaged? Or re-sold to another navy that the US would approve?

Probably salvage what they can, scrap the rest.

The knox ships aren't exactly new and by the sounds of it they're being replaced simply due to age.

So the Taiwanese are going to recieve 4 OHP class FFG from 2015 onwards to replace the aging Knox (Chi Yang) class FFG. But Taiwan has 8 Chi Yang class FFG in service. Are they going to replace 8 Chi Yang with only 4 OHP ? Meaning that the surface fleet will shrink from 26 major surface combatants to 22 ? Or are they going to keep 4 Chi Yang class going ?

It's hard to say...but I would bet that they will keep the four best Knox for now.

More OHPs will be coming available as time goes on and the LCS numbers grow and replace them in the US Navy. Perhaps the ROCN will pick up another four.

We'll have to wait and see.

If the Keep the four Knox class, which they have done decent upgrades to, they would end up with the following.

04 - Kee Lung Class (ex Kidd Class) DDGS
06 - Kang Ding Class (La Fayette Type) FFGs
12 - Cheng Kung Class (OHP Type) FFGs
04 - Chi Yang (ex Knox Class) FFGs

That's the 26 major surface combatant vessels for now.

UH60M program moving ahead

did I miss the original contract for these frames? Thought only 4 had been actually purchased so far.

NASC getting -60Ms??? Did they hit the lotto???

Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., Stratford, Conn., was awarded a $46,867,800 firm-fixed-price contract to convert 26 UH-60M Black Hawk aircraft to Taiwan Army and Taiwan National Airborne Service Corps configurations.

Estimated completion date is Aug. 30, 2016. Fiscal 2014 other procurement funds were obligated at the time of the award. One bid was solicited and one received. Work location is Stratford, Conn.

Hsun Hai-class corvette

In the Taipei Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition in 2013, the Navy unveiled a model of the Hsun Hai-class corvette, the first ship is scheduled to complete by November, 2014. Expected to be armed with 16 domestic Hsiung Feng (Brave wind) II/III ship-to-ship missiles. It should become a formidable counterpart to the Type 022 missile boat used by PLAN, and poses a certain level of threat to any future opponent's aircraft carrier task force.

Wow, a catamaran FAC with a helo pad, a CIWS, what looks like a 76mm gun and 16 SSMs.

These are a much, much larger class than the Type 022. Substantially larger displacement, larger crew, much larger weapons load.

Nice the way they have those ports on the side for the SSM exhaust to vent out right into the sea.

I wonder how many they plan to build?

Rumor has it that ROCN plans to build at least a dozen of them. According to the Taiwanese press, although designed to be a multi-role vessel, one of its primary objective is to "destroy", or at least, harass any opponents aircraft carrier group, by wolfpacking and unload a barrage of SSMs on an aircraft carrier before quickly retreats to safety.

The possible drawback is that installing 16 SSMs on a ship under 1000 ton. will significantly reduce its speed, hopefully the stealth capability will be able to compensate this.

IMHO , biggest drawback of the ship is lack of SAMs . According to public information ,all they have is a 76mm gun and Phalanx CIWS . So , if discovered they would be hard pressed to defend themselves . Size of the ship would not be a problem (catamarans usually have smaller displacement then monohulls ) . Speed : different sources place flank speed at 40+ kt , and cruising speed at 30kt . Not bad , but I don't think that would be sufficient for the types of attack they intend . Maybe they should consider building ekranoplan :D

Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST), the primary research and development institution of the Republic of China Ministry of National Defense's Armaments Bureau, had announced eight new UAVs under development in a recent aerospace and technology application exhibition. Not much is known about them at this point, but still worth a look:

Ekranoplan would require a huge amount of resource, funding, and industrial facilities to build, which is what Taiwan just cannot afford. Even the Soviet Union at the height of its industrial power couldn't create a satisfactory result, I don't think Taiwan can do a better job at it.

Back to the catamarans FAC, some of the Taiwanese press claimed that a 2,500-3,000 ton variant was proposed to the ministry of defense, if the claim is true, then this could be a possible indigenous littoral combat ship or a multirole frigate underway.
