No offence to the Russian engineers but Russia has a poor record "translating" their numerous pretty aircraft models to real production-ready aircraft.

What's the point of "design bureaus" if they don't design things regardless if it gets produced or not?.

It is a hold-over from soviet times but it helps maintain know-how and explore solutions for problems that might show up when something actually needs to be built.

This actually resembles the Blowfish drone somewhat. I wonder if it fills the same niche in the Russian Air Force.
Possibly as a future application however they have it listed as being used for terrain mapping, scouting, cargo transportation [up to 50kg] and search and rescue operations. It is substantially bigger than the “blow fish” drone.

Rumours saying it will cost $30 million. If that's true, I take back everything I said. That sounds insanely cheap in this day and age.

I wouldn’t even necessarily call it an expose.

Although the aircraft is similar in structure and design to the American project, which unlike the “Checkmate” aircraft never left the drawing board I’m sure it will most certainly boast different characteristics and capabilities. [Think AV-8 and the YAK-38]

I think what is important here is that a substantial amount of money has been put into a program that isn’t a simply redesign of an existing airframe which has the potential capability of changing or reinforcing power structures and projections in developing militaries across the globe.

So although you may write-it off for now it is something to look at going forward for its potential implications.
