Deliveries of new Il-78M-90A tanker aircraft to Russian air forces will be started in 2018, RIA Novosti reports with reference to a source close to the Russian military-industrial sector.

This Il-78M-90A aircraft will be the first tanker aircraft manufactured in Russia. Earlier all the tankers were assembled by Tashkent Aviation Production Association named after V.P. Chkalov (TAPOiCh, Uzbekistan).

“It is expected that the first Il-78M-90A will be delivered to the air forces in 2018,” the source noted.

This February United Aircraft Corporation said that Ulyanovsk Aviation Plant started production of first Il-78M-90A prototype.

Il-78M-90A derived from Il-76MD-90A aircraft will be the primary tanker aircraft used to refuel aircraft operated by long-range, frontline and special aviation.

The jet allows refueling two aircraft simultaneously (like Su-27 and MiG-29) using fueling equipment mounted on its wing. The tail fueling equipment is designed for refueling of long-range and special aviation aircraft.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia plans to build a fleet of supersonic military transport aircraft with an unprecedented payload of 220 tons capable of deploying a full-fledged armored army to anywhere in the world in seven hours, Expert Online reported Thursday.

A fleet of 80 such aircraft, dubbed PAK TA, will be built by 2024 and will be capable of transferring 400 Armata heavy missile tanks or 900 light armored vehicles with ammunition to the American continent or Australia in 7-8 hours, according to the media outlet, which cited a military source who attended a closed meeting of the Military-Industrial Commission in Moscow.

"For your understanding, one flight of the [PAK TA aircraft] fleet will be enough to deploy, say, to Cuba an operational and tactical army unit comparable to the total amount of US and NATO forces in Iraq," Expert Online quoted the source as saying.

One PAK TA aircraft can transport five heavy missile tanks, anti-aircraft missile complexes, multiple launch missile systems, and anti-tank missile fighting vehicles, without refueling a distance of 4,350 miles, the source elaborated.

Expert Online added that the ambitious PAK TA project will include a family of medium to super-heavy aircraft.

The heaviest of the aircraft will significantly exceed the carrying threshold of the existing Antonov An-124 Ruslan, an aircraft with up to 165 tons payload.

Russia, China may coordinate on nuclear-powered destroyer
Staff Reporter 2015-03-19 15:42 (GMT+8)

Russia is very likely to start construction on the world's third nuclear-powered destroyer with the assistance of China, according to the Sputnik News based in Moscow.

Admiral Igor Kasatonov, retired deputy commander of the Russian Navy, said the construction of the 10,000-ton Leader-class guided-missile destroyer would begin in 2017. Vasily Kashin, a military expert from the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies based in Moscow, said the project provides a new opportunity for China and Russia to deepen defense cooperation.

The Leader-class destroyer would be the world's third nuclear-powered destroyer after the USS Truxtun (DLGN-35) and USS Bainbridge (DLGN-25) of the United States. Since both American vessels were later redesignated cruisers, the Leader-class would in fact be the only nuclear-powered destroyer in the world. Kashin said that the Leader-class is larger than the two American ships.

Unlike the US Navy, Russia does not have overseas naval bases around the world, the piece said, and it makes sense for Russia and China to build nuclear-powered destroyers or cruisers that can remain at sea for longer. Kashin also said China is working hard on the design of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The participation of China in the construction of the Leader-class destroyer may give China the experience it needs, he said.
