The answer to that, in terms of Russia developing it into a modern MPA is a definite yes, they are capable of doing it.

Now, will the do so? We will have to wait and see.

Also...if they did begin developing it would it be equivalent in capability to the P-8?

Well, historically the Soviet and now the Russian ASW capability, particularly for aircraft, has lagged well behind the US.

Could they overcome the historical disparity with this aircraft?

IMHO, doubtful.

Bu that is not as important as whether or not the Russians would develop a new MPA aircraft with TU-214 derivative that is much better than what they currently have?

I believe the answer to that question could easily be yes, and that in itself (IMHO) would make it worth their while if they had the funds and established the priority.

And THOS questions end up being the real issue for the Russian Navy.

Is such an MPA a Russian priority?

and...do they have the funds?
I think you do not consider the Russian perspective, each nation builds their weapons according to their needs, and also design philosophy, just see it in aircraft like Mi-24, the helo is not like other type of helicopter, it is heavy, can carry troops, same is is Tu-214 they will develop it depending in their needs, if they are better of worst i do not know every thing depends in their operational history and combat record, i highly recommend you watch TV Zvezda, they have sometimes videos with a small text description, thus you can see their own opinion, just look at this video

they have their own opinion about their own weapons, it is in Russian but still interesting to watch this Mi-28 video titled the rotary wing tank.

by78, nothing you said here applies to my post.

I do consider the Russian perspective.

The questions I posed and answered are simple and direct.

We do not need to create senseless arguments over such opinions. I clearly stated that what I said was simply my opinion.

As far as that goes...I maintain that the Russians could make a very decent MPA platform of the TU-214, which is really all I said initially.

i got your point perfectly, my comment was because Tu-214 could be developed into a P-8 analog, i did not deny it, i simply said, the Russians might develop a P-8 type upon another platform MS-21 or Sukhoi super jet or with other technologies, but if you watch Russian tv programs about their weapons you find they go for other solutions, for example this excellent video says the original Su-34 represent solutions not present in any western aircraft, yes Su-30 is based upon F-15E and they say it, Russlan Martirosov Su-34 general designer explains, i mean i understand for you it might be an excellent platform, i just said the Russians judge their aircraft upon other parameters and ideas.

This an excellent tv program about Su-34

Russian navy in 2030 perspective.

Many actual ships are build during USSR execpt 4 MSC : 1 Kirov, 1 Udaloy II and 2 Neutrashimyy, in 20 years very very few and in 2020 all others Slava, Udaloy etc... are decommissionned.

A simple calculation one ship have a lifetime of about thirty years so if a fleet wants to have 30, 1 by year must be build and Russia is far from the account !

I have read an article and in 2030 Russian surface fleet would have :
1 CV
2 CGN
3 DDG/CG, CG for size, new 12000 t
27 FFG : 20 Gorshkov, 6 Grigorovitch, 1 Neutrashimyy
CO : 9 Steregushiy, ? Pr 22160, 20 Pr 21630/21631.

You can see the importance of Gorshkov for the offshore capabilities ( blue water ) of this Navy.

I thought the Russian were working and planning on another CV instead of just 1 by 2030?
