The Russian Parliament wants to shelve the Mistral ships

(defensa.com) Russia has grown tired of waiting for the arrival of the Mistral helicopter carrier ships ordered from France and prefers to demand the return of money spent over the corresponding compensation included in the contract. This is what would result from the statements of Tuesday the head of the Duma Defense Committee in the Russian Parliament, Vladimir Komoyedov. To Komoyedov, contract vessels had more political than military component, since it is ships that are not essential for the Russian Navy, which said that if France did not surrender soon, Russia should not expect more performance the contract.

The Russian government consortium Rosobonoroexport commissioned the French shipyard DCNS in 2011 to build two Mistral class helicopter carriers (Vladivostok and Sevastopol) amounting to 1,200 million euros, whose delivery has been delayed for political reasons. In mid-January, the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Moscow planned to file a lawsuit against Paris for non-delivery of the helicopter carrier within six months.

Some voices in Russia now openly criticize the choice of France as a supplier of warships, it is considered that the local industry could have carried out the project and also questioned have commissioned these vessels to a member of NATO, a military alliance antagonistic to Russia.
