I'm not even sure if the Israeli corvette was hit by a C-802. Was the type of missile used ever confirmed?

Are these T-80 MBT's without ERA & upgrades?

Look like T 62s however if they are T-80s they must be first version of tanks. I am pretty sure they are not, looks like it has five wheels. Plus driving side on right not center as T 80.

I don't see how Georgia could have possibly gotten Chinese C-802.

Does anybody know what aircraft the US is flying into Tblisi? There are transports, but any escorts? What kind of ships are ordered to deliver supplies to Georgia? LPD? LHD? Destroyers?

I know that the USAF is using C-17s to transport material into Georgia. I'm not sure about escorts or what type ship will be arriving in Georgia.

Well, US aircraft, troops, and naval units will all particiapte in the "humanitarian" effort in Georgia. IMHO, their presence there will much more likely ensure that the fighting stops because I do not believe Russia wants a war with the US.

That presence will also bolster Georgian and Ukrainian feelings towards the US.

I expect what Russia did in Georgia is much more likely to lead to Ukraine and perhaps Gerogia being admitted into NATO...but we shall see on that. Certainly, as we are already seeing, you will see nations like Poland coming much closr to the US and basing of US military units and missile shields in their countries.

I believe Russia's attempts to send a blunt message to these former satellites is going to backfire in a big way...and from talking to people I know in Georgia, and friends I have who have relatives there, I believe in the next election in Georgia, if the figthing indeed ends, if Russia does not turn around and make a grab for Tiblisis (which at this point will be very difficult for them to do politically), and with a US presence there, that you will see Saakashvili win an overwhelming re-election.

I expect Georgia will also be replacing much of their losses with much newer, more state of the art, western military equipment. I believe that will be another unintended consequence of this action.

But we shall see.
Miss guided optimism? Where's the money going to come from?
Georgia doesn't have any black gold in currency.
How are they going to get any hi tech western arms?

IMHO Russians are doing a fine job of making sure the Georgian army stay disemboweled.

I'd be more than interested about tactics used by russians... still following soviet doctrine (hardware is still mostly same, designed for massed thrusts of mechanized units supported by very heavy artillery fire) of armed combat or evolving into some other direction? This is the first time that we can analyze the modern russian army in battle facing more capable enemy than ragged guerillas.

In fact, probably first time latter-model soviet tanks (not export version tin cans which give whole T-series so bad name) are put to real test. Very interesting would to know how well tank self defence systems worked (ERA, ARENA) against georgian tank and AT missile fire...

Well now the really interesting part for us gets to happen. We get to analyze the capabilities of the weapon systems involved. I seriously doubt that the Moskva was hit, so I think that we can confirm for now that modern surface ships aren't so vunerable to AShMs as to be irrelevant.

As for the T-72: I will wait for more info, but at this point I'm leaning towards negative. Georgian T-72s suffered quite a few casualties at the hands of the South Ossetians, and they were only armed with RPGs. The reactive armour did little, apparently.

Other weapons systems, we will have to wait.

As for Russian air power doctrine, I think that although 5-10 losses is not an erosion of their combat capabilities at all, it does show that initially they were not entirely prepared to handle Georgia's SAM network. A larger more complex one would have inflicted far larger losses. However this will be an excellent learning opportunity for them and they will be able to learn like the US has in Iraq and Serbia.

The situation remains confusing, now I think this is becoming strange.
Russian forces still controll Gori and it's vicinity. Allegedly they're there to restore order and then turn controll over to local police. Then again, apperently police was forced out of Gori again after two hours. Some reports say even a show off took place. UNHCR staff was denied acces. South Ossetian militia men aggresively banished them. A lot of reporters caused nervousness with the soldiers. At one time one soldier (some sources say a russian) took the camara of a reporter with his pistol upheld. After seeing another one, he also chased that reporter and even shot into the air.

Russian forces also seem to return to Poti.
By controlling the coutries main traffic axis - Gori - they effectively limit movement considerably and tie up Georgia's economy.
Somehow, this is the next closest thing to annexation, bleeding a country out.

Very confusing situation. Now there are reports coming up that up to hunded russian armored vehicles are moving west from Zugdidi deeper into georgia.

If things like this keep going on, ceasefire will not hold.

Late model T-72 MBT(T-72S):

Those brick-like objects covering the tank are ERA(Explosive Reactive Armour). Note that the ERAs are placed on top of the turret to counter helicopter-launched ATGMs, and top-attack ATGMs like the Javelins. It's very difficult to judge the effectiveness of these ERAs, since both American and Russian are constantly modifying and improving the offensive armament and defensive armours of their tanks.
