This whole conflict just proves once more that there is no limit to human stupidity.

Before saying anything else, I must admit that I, for one, am surprised by this whole thing. What was the Georgian president thinking when he sent his regular army in and flattened half of the South Ossetian capital with artillery? And what were the Russians thinking when they sent in strategic bombers without EW and SEAD support?

But anyway, I think as more account of actual combat comes out, we'd have more opportunities to look at the tactics in this conflict.

The Russian airforce entered the war "on the go". No time for weeks of SEAD operations and only with limited numbers. The bulk of the work was done by SU-25 and SU-24 (a regiment of each) and a few strikes by heavy bombers.

The Russian losses happened during the first couple of days, after which only Manpads were a threat

Also, a number of armored vehicles including tanks, were lost on both sides, more on the Georgian side naturally because of the overwhelming numbers and air superiority.

What overwhelming numbers?....the Georgians had numerical superiority on the ground for the first 2-3 days....the fact is their command structure collapsed and the army broke.

I completely agree. May I add that SU 25 is meant to fight on the frontline supporting the trrops, naturally they would be vunerable to ground fire. Also Georgia's SU 25 were also vunerable to Russian fighter aircraft. The TU 22MR was a recon bird apparently it must of flew over a SAM sight or shot down by the limited number of Georgian fighters. Even US was afraid to use Apaches in Kosovo campaign. Did they use A-10s, I think they did not?

It's not looking good for the T-72 either, which has no choice but everything to lose in this conflict with all those photos and videos of burning or destroyed T-72s once again.

Its hard to judge from limited number of pictures and angles of photo capture, but alot of burnt out tanks still had ERA or seemed to penerated from the rear or side. Plus T 72 armor is no match for tandem warheads or bombs from aircraft.

Well sir, me too! In the other thread, I suggested the Russian should use their latest weapon in this war like the T-90 MBT for example. In stead they've used the T-72 which is old and not very possible to attract any customer. In the air, they've used some old Su-25, who's going to buy this? Me? Or you? Tu-22M3 has been rejected by China, and the only possible customer left is India. Hehe... this is interesting, after one loss, is the Indian still interested in this bomber?

With the combined arms assault the Russians brought to bear, ultimately on two fronts, which consisted of armor, infantry, and particularly air superiority, the Russians in fact had overwhelming superiority which caused the collapse in the north.

But the Georgians, IMHO, nonetheless acquited themselves well under the circumstances.

The Georgians had the initiative during the first 48 hrs because they had numerical superiority. There are some reports that they managed to repel the initial push in a narrow gorge north of the S. Ossetian capital, but were themselves eventually pushed back.

On the second day the Georgians (still more numerous) launched a counterattack and even managed to break through on one occassion and tried to cut off the Russians.

By the 3rd day once they lost the commanding heights they seemed to have broken down and started a headlong retreat

On the T-72....most seemed to have been taken out by infantry in ambushes or by artillery or aircraft

These events show that the US is impotent and is really a paper Tiger. The West have been trying to gain a Geo-political advantage in every corners of the World. Few examples are

a) In Darfur, the French and Israeli armed the African rebels to secede from Sudan in the "Oil rich region" but when the Arab militias attacked, they blamed China for arming Sudan and therefore abetting Darfur genocide.
b) In Afghanistan, the US created the Mujahideen Frankenstein to fight the Soviets and what they get is Al Queda, Jihadis and Talibans in their own backyard.
c) In Iraq, the US intend to rape Iraq of the Oil riches but now they get a bloody nose from Sunni/Al Queda and the Shites/Irani elements.
d) In Georgia, the West and Israeli made use of the Georgian puppets to challenged Russian interests and gain the strategic oil access from Central Asia. The West disregard the Russian interests in Serbia and carved out Kosovo independence. Now the Ossetian and Akhazians want independence, the West hypocritically said Russia must respect Georgian territorial integrity.
