Re: Georgia Attacks South Ossetia, War With Russia Looms

My question is what are the Russian thinking when i see TV footage of Tu-22M engaging in rocket strafing attacks...
Russia did not achieve full air superiority as is the case with NATO in Kosovo.
What do you gents think about the effectiveness/utility of short to medium range SAM cover in urban settings?

Are the Russians limited in their options of combat air support? Or is it simply casualty of war as expected?

Todays business.

Even less hard news today than usual, but here goes.

Russian forces are moving deeper into Georgia and there have been reports of columns moving towards Tbilisi.

The remainder of the Georgian Army has been told to demobilise and go home!

American troops on a humanitarian mission are now landing in Tbilisi.

My reading is that the fear of a coup by Georgian generals has prompted Saakashvili to demobilise his army and is now being protected by US Guards. Russia is reacting to this by occupying as much of the country as possible to close down as much of the US operation as possible.

This could be the reversal of the Russian occupation of Pristina Airport!

Georgia had limited number of SAM systems, and were successful initially in shooting down some Russian aircraft. But Georgia's losses cannot be easily replaced at this time. So they reached a choice between "use it and lose it" versus stashing it away.

The Russians have achieved effective air superiority, because their opponents packed up and went home. Georgia's leadership know they lost the gamble and is now seeking refuge behind the US and EU. They're trying to look as innocent, harmless, and in need of protection as much as possible.

Saakashvili is done. Even if he isn't overthrown or recalled, he won't survive the next election. The Russians didn't start this conflict for territorial gains, they did it to demonstrate to Georgia and Ukraine that when push comes to shove, the US and EU won't defend them militarily. It's basically a recap of Sino-Vietnam war where the PRC wanted to show the Vietnamese that the Soviets won't defend them.

I found an interesting article today:

New contracts weren’t approved as the arms sales were scaled back. Georgia’s request for 200 advanced Israeli-made Merkava tanks, for example, was turned down.

If this is accurate, then Georgia is disintegrating. I watched one BBC reporter on the TV ask one of the Russians advancing along the road to Tblisi out of Gori why they were there when there was a ceasfire. The Russian of course said that if they were advancing, then it was because that was what they were supposed to be doing.

I think the Russians know something that the rest of us are only just beginning to get hints of.

As a note, the Buk is the ground version of the same SAM system used in the Sovremannies and on the 052B. With a few kills here and there, it can now be advertised as "combat proven".

I wonder why the Russian don't employ their newest weapon in this battle, the T-90 for example. They can make the tanks combat proven by employing them in the war. This is a rare opportunity for the Russian to test their new weapon.

Well, US aircraft, troops, and naval units will all particiapte in the "humanitarian" effort in Georgia. IMHO, their presence there will much more likely ensure that the fighting stops because I do not believe Russia wants a war with the US.

That presence will also bolster Georgian and Ukrainian feelings towards the US.

I expect what Russia did in Georgia is much more likely to lead to Ukraine and perhaps Gerogia being admitted into NATO...but we shall see on that. Certainly, as we are already seeing, you will see nations like Poland coming much closr to the US and basing of US military units and missile shields in their countries.

I believe Russia's attempts to send a blunt message to these former satellites is going to backfire in a big way...and from talking to people I know in Georgia, and friends I have who have relatives there, I believe in the next election in Georgia, if the figthing indeed ends, if Russia does not turn around and make a grab for Tiblisis (which at this point will be very difficult for them to do politically), and with a US presence there, that you will see Saakashvili win an overwhelming re-election.

I expect Georgia will also be replacing much of their losses with much newer, more state of the art, western military equipment. I believe that will be another unintended consequence of this action.

But we shall see.

It was such a quick start (remember, it's only been since last Thursday/Friday ish, even though it has seemed a long time) that they didn't have time to bring in forces stationed elsewhere. They went in with the forces nearby, which didn't have the T-90 apparently.

I also believe old Santa will arrive with his four-legged friends to regain air superiority back for Georgia.

But we shall see?
