TBILISI, Georgia — Russia expanded its attacks on Georgia on Sunday, moving tanks and troops through the separatist enclave of South Ossetia and advancing toward the city of Gori in central Georgia, in its first direct assault on a Georgian city with ground forces during three days of heavy fighting, Georgian officials said.
The Georgian city of Gori is under "massive" attack from Russian artillery and planes and ground forces are preparing for an assault, a Georgian interior ministry spokesman said.
"There was massive bombing of Gori all evening and now we are getting reports of an imminent attack by Russian tanks," said spokesman Shota Utiashvili.
"Gori is being bombed massively from the air and from artillery as well."
He said Russian troops "are not there yet but it looks like they are getting ready for it".
Georgian forces were returning fire on Russian positions, he said.
A spokesman for Russia's defence ministry said he could neither confirm nor deny the report.
