It was not pretty at Toronto today, supposedly almost 300,000 people are without power tonight due to freezing rain destroying powerlines.

We had freezing rain yesterday, but nothing like that, in 1977 or 78 we had an Easter Ice Storm, knocked down powerlines, trees, a radio tower that was over 1000 ft was brought down by the weight of the ice. We lived in the country and cooked in the fireplace, in 4 or 5 days we bought a generator to run the grain bin and our electrically controlled gas furnace, in 10 days my Uncle had power, and he loaned us a tractor pto generator which ran our whole house, not sure that we ran it at night, but WOW, those poor people. We were farmers, but it was tough for us as well, our water was in a deep well, and the first generator would run that as well, needless to say, that could be a killer in Canada in January.

It's quite crazy how everything outside is wrapped in ice. They say it could take up to 3 days to fully restore power. Luckily my apartment is not affected, even though the little mall next to my apartment is out of power.

Still in bed.. my wife took that photo at 8am or so. No kids live in our building or in the building next to us. These buildings were built for disabled persons.

8 am?! Wow that almost looks like noon sun to me. What time is sun down over there?

Quick TUP take a small pot of boiling water and throw it outside to see if it turn into snow or small icicles in an instant before it touches the ground!:p

its the snow. Snow is not really white its reflective microscopic ice crystals. So when those of us who get snow get a nice full blanket of it it reflects the light in a massive way. Everything is brighter.
but the easiest way to tell that photo is either earlier in the morning or later in the day is the shadows of the trees.
my uncle was a navy intelligence photo analyst. He told me a number of things in the long chats I used to have with him. These were debates on current events, history, science, you name it. We could go for hours sometimes well I to the early morning mind you I was in my teens. One of the things we talked about one time was the Cuban missile crisis. He pulled out a book from his personal library and showed me the classic photos taken of the missiles. He then showed me how it was that he as someone trained to look at these images would identify something like the missiles.
shadows he told me are important. Everything and everyone has a shadow. Even if its covered by camo netting or in a hanger it has a shadow. Until noon, that shadow is going to stretch and after noon again closer to dawn and dusk a shadow is at its longest.
now as I look at the photo and by also living with snow. I note the length of the shadows of the trees. If the shadow was directly under the tree then the photos would have been taken at about noon. Since pops said the photo was taken in the morning so from that I can tell you his wife was shooting facing the south. Because the sun rises in the east casting the shadows to the west. And the orientation of the photo having east on the left and west on the right means south.
