I am not sure whether the cattle are stupid, perhaps "stupid" is not really a proper word. For 100% sure they are very useful animal, imagine our life without them.

It happens in many parts of New Zealand, even just 5 km from some cities. Cattle and sheep are the most common.

I've never heard a cattle killed by car accident in NZ or if it is the case, would be very few ......

Actually most animals are transported by truck now. What you see is the local farmer just moving stock from one pasture TO another and they are usually a short distance.

He's right, we used to move our herd down the road a mile or so to another farm that we owned for pasture, cattle can be driven or lead, depends on the herd, we usually used a bucket of corn, or a couple of bales of hay had the "lead heifer" following the tractor, and most of the rest of the herd would follow along, calves often hung back and had to be "rounded up" or pushed to stay with the main herd, but no biggie. Bull's of course are rather independent, but would stay with the herd, we have used a horse, three wheelers or four wheelers to pick up the strays and drive them back to the main herd, so it was a matter of helping the occasional car get through. Now cattle that "get out" of the fenced enclosure are a very bad thing, and yes, they do not mix with cars or truck traffic, they can cause a very serious accident. Deer are also a real hazard, although our local deer populace is down at present, but I am always aware, particularly on the motorcycle.

I thought this only happen in Cambodia. Cattle are really stupid animals, they never avoid cars. Sometime, they just walk straight into cars. On Cambodian national road (we don't have highway), cattle are always killed by car accident and sometime that also kills the driver.
Out west in the USA we have two different types of laws for cattle on highways. And these laws can change from county to county.

One law is called "Open Range," which is what it is out where I live. If you hit livestock (cows or sheep) on the highway in such areas, it is your fault. Plain and simple...does not matter if there are fences or not. You have to watch out for them and ensure you avoid them, or you pay the damages to the rancher, and it is listed as your fault on the ticket.

Where ity is not "Open Range," it means the Rancher is liable. He has to keep the livestock off of the road. If they get out and cause an accident, he is liable, and the ticket lists him as the cause.

Usually, Open Range is only out in the country and in areas where livestock are big parts of the economy. Around any major cities or good sized towns, usually Open Range laws are not in existence.

Please let me/us know Jeff whether it's a good book. I may consider buying it from Amazon

It is a GREAT book. Great introduction where they list the current plans and state of affairs for all major navies (24 small type pages in the intro) Then the meat of the book is a list of every combatant (major and minor) of every navy (no matter how large or small) for every nation on earth that has any kind of Navy.

It lists every ship's specifications including the sizes, the armament, compliment, electronics/sensors, etc. There are then one or several pictures of the vessels and diagrams. Thousands of pictures and diagrams in this book, and all meticulously up to date. It then has some very decent remarks about each class and their current status and plans too. All of it listed alphabetically by country.

I do not believe you can find a better reference. It's a large book (Width and Height) and has 984 pages.

I got my last one in 2000 and have been wanting another now for about five years. But they are not cheap.

At the US Naval Institute, if you are a member, if will cost you about $167 + shipping so you end up near $#180 like that price on Amazon.

We found someone on ebay who had ten of them for $152 including shipping and that was where my wife got it.

I will not be looking to get another until at least 2020, and maybe later depending on what all comes out.

Darn it Jeff you have gone and made me homesick. Here's a promotional video of my home province where my dad farmed and on a couple of occasions I went on his cattle drive to the stockyards. That route is more less the same as we took.
saw a few more sea lions though.

and its good to see the social horse rides are still going strong.....been there done that too. Life there is much better than being in the big smoke, hanging around hamburger joints and playing computer games.

Well, I'm not only the Air Force Brat, but a fellow "farm boy" as well, nice to know that about you B.I.B., my Dad was out on the farm until the last week prior to his death, he was 73, very "bittersweet" for me as well, I miss the farm and working with our cattle, but one sibling and her husband have "taken over", shame too, but I spose that's life, my Dad would be broken hearted, as he wanted the farm to "keep us all together". My brothers and I haven't pushed things, as we really don't like that kind of "family trouble", but at least we are all still on the same page together.

I prefer the non open-range areas, livestock on roads are just too dangerous!

So, what did everyone do/buy on Boxing Day? Anyone got any awesome deals? I usually stay home on Boxing Day knowing that every mall will be packed full of people. But this year my parents came over for Christmas so I decided to take them out instead of having everyone staying in the hotel all day long. And... never again! Personally I really hate waiting in line, especially when the line starts before the highway exit just to get into the parking lot.

On a side note, I did buy a pair of pretty nice ski boots (my first pair :p) for 50% off. Finally no more renting ski boots for me.

Well, my little brother finally brought his new/old 1972 Cessna 150L down to Jacksonville so I could get a little "stick time". It has a Horton STOL kit on it, and a climb prop, so for a 150 the performance was very good, it flies nicely so we enjoyed our time as brothers flying and shooting a few landings, so we had a good day. Happy New Year gentlemen, hope this finds you all well. brat
