PLAN Type 035/039/091/092 Submarine Thread

Forgive my impertinence but I don't believe that this particular submarine is a new Yuan class boat.

There are too many differences for it to be a mere continuation of the Yuan class.

The joint between the bows and the upper casing is stepped and not smooth.

The forward hydroplanes resemble Kilo-type ones and appear to be able to retract into the upper casing.

Unlike all previous Yuan boats, this one has a very long sail and no sail-mounted hydro-planes.

The sail is even longer than the one on the Kilo class boats.

The stern of this boat resembles that of the Song and Yuan class with the vertical tail rudder/fins unlike the Kilos with their rudder/fins mounted underneath.

This may be a new class of SSK!

I agree. This submarine is different from any other chinese sub. It appears to be a new class.

To duskylim, we are calling this 039B and not 039A (which is the designation for Yuan)
A new photo, I wonder what those dotted lines on the hump are. In previous subs, the dotted lines are normally used to indicate the presence of sonar.

Does anybody know the google earth coordinates of the shipyard in Wuhan that constructs military ships, especially this new submarine?

Nevermind, I think I have found it, the bridge in the background is the main one running over the Yangtze in Wuhan and spiky tower just behind that is the Hubei TV tower meaning that the yards location is approximately 30 31 57 N 114 17 12 E.

Compared to some of the other shipyards I have saved on my google earth as known PLAN contractors the Wuhan facility is comparably small.

Its an inland shipyard. I think its natural for it to be smaller in comparition to the coast shipyards. Small subs dont have a problem navigating the yangtse.

The torpedo tube doors don't seem to be visible from the front like the Yuan boats. Maybe it uses a vertical launch system?
Or maybe it is just lower on the ship.

Dear tp:

I guess I was influenced by huitong's post on his website, calling this an "improved Yuan".

He also uses the 039B designation.

After looking at it I felt that it was not related to the Yuan class, but rather an entirely new class of submarine.

In Xinhui's website, he refers to this sub as the Yuan B.

On his last post regarding this sub (

) you will note in picture number 4 those 'dotted lines' are actually some sort of candy cane-like barrier posts - perhaps to warn VIP people visiting the sub not to fall off the edge.

The only problem I have with the 039B designation is that its easy to confuse with the Song and Yuan classes.

I also feel that if its a different class of SSK, then it should be named differently to avoid confusion also - in that sense, Yuan B or improved Yuan are rather unsatisfactory.

Sure, I would say that 052B and 052C are clearly differenclasses they are definitely different from 052A. So, in that sense, 039B can be really different from original songs and still be classified as a 039.
