PLAN Type 035/039/091/092 Submarine Thread

Yes, that's why I mentioned in my earlier post from a geopolitical aspect, that area is very very different than the Atlantic. China is definitely at a disadvantage because the countries surrounding it are not her allies.

US SOSUS network to track Russian subs would never have worked if Greenland, Iceland, and the UK are not allies of the US back during the cold war.

Another way for China to get out of that "pickle" is to build a chain of islands outside the US Allied nations and put their SOSUS system there, like somewhere along the 2nd or 3rd island chain. Why not, they have the money and technology to do it. It's all depends on the geopolitical circumstances.

That doesn't make sense. China cannot even guarantee its ability to break out of the First Island Chain in a hostile marine environment, it can forget about maintaining a SOSUS network that far out. I think what China is aiming for is complete SOSUS coverage of the entire marine environment within the First Island Chain, akin to satellite coverage.

Domination within the First Island Chain in order to protect Chinese home territory from attack has to be a higher priority than breaking out for offensive action that is less likely to succeed given overall military and strategic realities. With how fast and destructive modern warfare can be and the high level of infrastructure development that is vulnerable in a modern country it is virtually impossible to recover from getting hit on the home front in a major conflict. I think that is China's logic.

An island can have an airstrip and a harbor to hunt submarines as well. Not to mention large radars and communication systems, plus drones to keep an eye out. Now imagine an chain of island each containing what I've just mention can really gave China an advantage. SOSUS would be just an icing on the cake. The best part...no diplomatic row because it away from any one country EEZ or disputed islands but close enough to engage it just in case.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MODERATORS ANNOUNCEMENT <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

We re making our PLAN Naval forum a little more specific and a lot easier to work with on certain classes.

The PLAN Submarines Thread will become the "PLAN Type 035/039/091/092 Submarine Thread" and going forward will be for those Classes, including the Kilo class.

We will have separate threads for the following classes.

The PLAN Type 041 Yuan AIP & Kilo Submarine Thread
The PLAN Type 092/094 Nuclear Submarine Thread
The PLAN Type 095/096 Nuclear Submarine Thread

Post your discussions accordingly. I will move (over time) many of the specific posts about the various new classes away from this thread and to the new threads.

Thanks.

Guys, I have two questions regarding some specific submarine-related places I stumbled upon on Google Earth. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me will share his/her knowledge.

First, I noticed that there have often been some Mings stationed in one corner of the Lushun harbour (collage of Google Earth pictures below). Is this the place where they scrap the Mings? It certainly looks that way to my untrained eye.

Second, there have often been subs stationed at piers by the demagnetization facility near the Xiangshan base (another Google Earth imagery collage below). Is this facility part of the nearby submarine base? What are those subs doing there? Are they stationed there for demagnetization purposes, repairs, or waiting to be scrapped? And to which flotilla do they belong  Questions, questions.

Thanks for all input!

Someone says this is the model of a new test boat
Looks more like a model of the one-off, test submarine, the Type 032 Qing to me.

Yes, Jeff, I think you are totally right. My point is, If the model is accurate, then it looks like 032 can hold two JL missiles in its conning tower and several SLCMs in its hull.

Nice pics of the model.

But on the actual sub, we have not seen that level of detail to date.

We have been told that it is a test bed for Ballistic Missiles from a diesel electric...but not seen to date the actual tubes with that level of detail, etc.

Unless someone has seen pics I have not found yet. If so, that would be very helpful.
