There were a lot of discussion about 095 and 096 since 2010, now 2014 there still no signs of them whatsoever.

I think they are hoaxes.

Good work. keep thinking of that, maybe that will make you happier and feel safer. Afterall to you, the Chinese are not capable of anything from aircraft to engines and now to submarines too.

Many people said the same thing about 093 and 094...and you see where that led.

The Chinese are definitely working on their next generation boats. I cannot speak to 096, but most believe that the first 095 SSN has either already been launched and is in trials...or at least is very near to it.

I see no reason, given the PLAN's demonstrated capabilities with 093 and 094, for this to not be true...and it is certainly not a hoax.

We know they exist, but obviously some of the original rumours about them meaning to show up in the early 2010s is now proven false.

But they are not hoaxes in the sense that they are not real projects.

SOSUS is a great tool to keep track of what's coming and what's going. It makes sense to deploy them far away from a nation's coast. The GIUK gap was perfect place because it tells NATO (ok more like the US) which Soviet sub left home port, where and when it transited the Atlantic and where and when it came back home.

Can SOSUS be manipulated or disrupted? Had the former Soviet Union ever tried anything to get by it? I'm just curious what's its advantages and disadvantages.

China doesn't have much wiggle room for SOSUS. That's one of the reasons for the island disputes. What's going to stop anyone from tinkering and tampering when China doesn't control those islands.

I can tell you that in the 60s and 70s Sosus was relent upon consistent sounds anything shorter then a few minutes and it was missed.
the key flaw in Sosus was human. When it was leaked to the Russians via the Walkers.

China is in a pickle when it comes to other navie's undersea sonar surveillance, especially the US, who has allies along the entire first island chain and almost certainly has it lined up and down with SOSUS nets from Korea all the way down to Australia.

Yes, that's why I mentioned in my earlier post from a geopolitical aspect, that area is very very different than the Atlantic. China is definitely at a disadvantage because the countries surrounding it are not her allies.

US SOSUS network to track Russian subs would never have worked if Greenland, Iceland, and the UK are not allies of the US back during the cold war.
