Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

It's known that Israeli Popeye cruise missile is nuclear capable from Dolphin Class SSK

Pakistan has a huge nuclear arsenal capable of launch from ballistic missiles and Babur Cruise missile is nuclear capable which has a diameter that can fit into the SSK missile tubes so why can't we have nuclear launched missiles from SSK?

Also Ra'ad LACM is also nuclear capable what's stopping the Navy from having a nuclear capable cruise missile when Air Force and Army have it, it's not even a issue all we end to do is the integration

To add further & the same I was mentioned couple of times earlier on the same thread, the very reason why PN had scraped U214's & Merlin's b/c they want Ra'ad (LACM) to be inducted & moved to China for tailored SSK's (the famous 6 SSK deal).

PN is extensively involved with Chinese counterparts in the development of this SSK (Quing???). IMO, this SSK is the combination of Yaun/U214 & Merlin, which will bring the new dimensions in Arabian & Indian sea.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

This entry is not about any PLAN submarines per se, but about recent developments in Chinese anti-submarine warfare capabilities and other submarine related technologies:

1) I'm loathe to cite the alarmist Washington Times, but it states that China is building an underwater listening array similar to the U.S. SOSUS to track submarines.

2) The development of multibeam echosounders to map the ocean floor to aid underwater navigation.

3) The development of fiber-optic hydrophone array.

Lyle Goldstein over at the Naval War College did write about the underwater listening array (using open source Chinese literature) so I that's pretty credible.

Thanks for the info. I will look it up.

China definitely has a need for a SOSUS equivalent, and unsurprisingly, we now know she's building one.

It's in Proceedings. Unfortunately, that article happens to be under a paywall.

I'm more interested to see where the SOSUS line is in china's case. The geopolitical aspect is obviously very much different than the GIUK gap used to detect Russian SSBNs and attack entering or exiting the Atlantic.

Across the mouth of the Bohai Sea for sure. The Taiwan Strait would likely be the next target. Then the rest of China's coastline as they build up their SOSUS-type capabilities. SCS areas would be prime targets as well.

SOSUS is a very powerful tool for the hunt for SSN/SSBN

In the early days USSR didn't even know of its existence and were confused how NATO members were able to detect their submarines

SOSUS can not only detect submarines but also using the acoustic sounds can establish what type of submarine has crossed the line

Guys...read the rules.

SOSUS is a great tool to keep track of what's coming and what's going. It makes sense to deploy them far away from a nation's coast. The GIUK gap was perfect place because it tells NATO (ok more like the US) which Soviet sub left home port, where and when it transited the Atlantic and where and when it came back home.
