PLAN Type 035/039/091/092 Submarine Thread

I believe what he meant ... Type 096 is about to be commissioned :)

Ah yes, Type 096, well there is now two nuclear submarine bases one at Yalong and Qingdao, much media coverage of Yalong naval base showed underground tunnels and 3 piers, and as Franco-Russe has pointed out a 4th pier is now built there, which really means 8 nuclear attack submarines can be based there with 8 more a Qingdao totalling 16 SSBN/SSN with the underground bases probably used when they overhaul or replacement of nuclear warheads

How they are split is anyone's guess, if they build 10 SSN to 6 SSBN which is likely then we can have a very formidable nuclear force, these 16 submarines will be of the class Type 093/095 for the SSN and Type 094/096 for the SSBN

Furthermore how they are split is again is anyone's guess but we can probably say less Type 093 SSN than Type 095 SSN, since the latter is a much more advanced class, say 3-4 Type 093 and 6-7 Type 095

For SSBN again 3-4 Type 094 SSBN and 2-3 Type 096 SSBN, these Chinese ballistic nuclear attack submarines would be of very high interest to the USN, they represent the jewel in the crown of the navy, the pinicle of naval technology

This in addition to 48 modern SSK, 2 Flotillas of 8 units in each fleet, total submarine fleet nearing 64 submarines

While we are focused on the surface fleet the sub-surface fleet of the Chinese navy is emerging as a very powerful force indeed, like in reality they are the unseen forces of the sea

Yalong Bay naval base and the fourth pier

I'm not familiar with PLAN's sub force... what does the Type 096 look like? does it still look like the Delta design with the squarish hump or more streamline like the Ohio class?

Not necessarly. Have anyone seen anything (photo, model, etc) of Type 096?

It's a hypothesis based on the fact that the PLA usually is ready for the next generation of systems to be commissioned before declassifying a weapons system.

Yes, but that's the old days. Before Chinese military all of a sudden decides to be "transparent".

A drawing view with great caution !

For the moment Type 094 are in building 3 operational and 3 follow.

I think it is premature to talk about the Type 096, it will probably in service for the next decade and for know these characteristics with the Chinese !!!

As against the first type 095 was to put down late 2011, larger than the Type 093, mainly more silencious but also more versatile because probably armed with CM.

well how quiet are these SSBN? last time i heard the type 94 is compareble to 30yrs old USSR subs. both US/Japan has sub monitor station across pacific, and US experience of hunting SSBN as well as sonar tech is one of the best. if the SSBN is too noise, then it will just be practice target for US SSN.

The subs do not have to have the noise level of Triomphant or Vanguard class subs to do their jobs, particularly since their major role is in the development of deployment systems and doctrine for the SSBN force, and they are more than functional for the duties they perform. Aside from newer SSBNs being designed and developed, they don't operate without coverage from friendly SSKs or SSNs either.
