Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

If the PLAN buys 4, that probably means 3 operational and 1 completely stripped down. :D
Well, they did not do that with Kilos, did they? The article indicates the vessels would be built in China so they would not need to do that...they would be building them themselves and will know all there is to know about them.

It's just an interesting development. The Lada Class that these are based on has not performed up to the Russian expectations. They built one, extensively tested it while starting three others, and then stopped construction on those three.

I'm still pretty wary of this report.

This could be the navy version of the Su-35 story. Maybe next year, we will see stories like "China will purchase Russian made new aircraft carriers."

Next year there will an army version. china will purchase BMP-3s. Though more likely is China will purchase S-400, which is probably true.

If lying is a strategy to sell something, the Russkies might to be the master of this skill though it's pathetic that you need to lie to prove the quality of your product.Lol.
PS.There was already an army version that the PLA will purchase the T-90 MBT in the early of the 2000s.

Lada is just another Russian gimmick that looks good on their sales brochures.
They can't even produce it for their own navy, how can they export any ?

Even the largest Amur is only 1650 tons. The Yuan, IIRC, is about 3,000 tons.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems to imply sacrificing a lot of capability (increased weapons load, staying power) going from a Soviet style, ocean going SSK to those smaller European ones (unless the 095 is so wonderful that the PLAN will only use SSKs for more mundane missions from now on).

Maybe the PLAN are planning to use the Amur towards the South China Sea conflicts. They just need something that's inexpensive and effective enough to guard those islands and trade routs.

I don't buy this news. The Amur class is rumoured to have critical design flaws that not even the russian navy is ready to accept them.

Besides, I don't think russia has significant advantage over china as far as conventional submarine goes.

I see this news as a shameless attempt of the Russians to claim Chinese's submarine success. Think about it, Lada and Yuan classes look almost identical that even the most seasoned military observer would have a hard time telling them apart. I foresee the Russians to claim every Yuan submarine produced from here on as a Lada and a Russian success, with the Western press happily yap that shit up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the article mentioned that the deal has yet to be signed (before 2015, it claims) and that China is still debating whether to sign it or not. So this is yet again one of those news that speak of nothing but anticipation of something that, with the advent of the Type 043 and Chinese AIP, will probably not materialize. I do not think I need to mention that countless times the Russians have fabricated news. I am also aware that China has a Type212-esque submarine under development with a possible mHD drive, which will far outperform the supposed Amur if it is built, therefore destroying the credibility and logic of this purchase.
