PLAN Type 035/039/091/092 Submarine Thread

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Correct me if I'm wrong, very recently I have read a Chinese article saying how the improvement in basic military equipment bettered the lives of PLA servicemen. One of the examples was how special ear-muffs could filter out irritating loud noises from the engine room in the submarine, filtering only the very high and low frequency noises, while allowing human voices to be heard without having to speak louder.

If my memory serves me correctly, the latest US submarines are so quite that even signs were attached to walls, notifying the sailors to walk in careful manner to not create extra noises.

If you have to wear ear muffs in the engine room, I wonder how loud the acoustic signature would be.... Also how far ahead the US counterparts are in noise reduction field......

For one, a nuclear boat beats a diesel boat hands down, unless when the latter runs on battery not its diesel generator; and secondly it doesn't tell what type of boat (typical for Chinese media) or when that article was published - for all we know they could be talking about those Romeo-class antique.

As for those noise-cancelling ear-muffs, I know the Chinese have been making good, working replicas (don't ask me about the quality, haven't bought one yet, still above my pay grade and/or my primary spending is on my beloved PC...though by what I've read said "ok" in terms of function, but not as comfortable to wear as the real deal) of various US/Europe brands - such as MSA Sordin, ComTac II, Peltor 6S - and as early as 2 years ago you can buy them commercially - in Hong Kong you can find them at those airsoft gun shops...in short stuff like that not above the Chinese manufacturing capability, and their artillery corp already have such protection gear.

Err ... correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the submarine's propulsion system suppose to be classified? What I meant was the fan which is at the end of the Submarine, the number of fan-blades is suppose to be classified?

If that is the case, then I would caution our Chinese friends that the red cover really doesn't do much to conceal the amount of blades on the propulsion system of the submarine.

At least that is what I know about submarines to be of valuable intel in warfare.
I believe all modern subs have skewed 7 bladed propellers.

I have a pair of Howard Leight noise-canceling earmuffs that I use when I go shooting. They let normal conversation in but filter out almost everything else. They are pretty much top of the line but cost <$50. I'm sure the technology is not above anybody's manufacturing capability. Even China's. :p

From the shape, size and made of the propellers, or screws as in the jargon, you can get a good estimate not just part of the acoustic profile of the sub (to be more specific, how quiet it can get), also the milling and production technologies involved, and all of them are closely guarded secrets - not just the Chinese, it's a common practice.

Thus it's a common practice that the screws are covered, even the newest generation of western subs that used ducted propellers they just cover the entire duct.

Looking at the way the propeller is covered with the shape clearly visible, it wasn't really meant to be hidden. One can quite easily count the seven blades.

Are the loading a torpedo or a cruise missile in a torpedo-like casing?

Can't see there's any screw at the rear end so very likely a capsule, but I doubt that's a SLCM for there has been yet any news about Chinese SLCM, more likely sub-launched anti-ship missile.
