It's probably true. Consider which subs are most likely getting spotted right now -> 039G1 and 035G, they are probably quite a bit noisier than kilo submarines in transit. Actually, I'm pretty sure the subs that are making the most patrols are Song class submarines. The Yuan submarines are quieter than Song submarines, but it's not a generational thing. Neither Song nor Yuan are that quiet when they are in transit. Now, Kilo will obviously never picked up by Western navy, because they never leave the home port.

But, all of this says is that Chinese submarines are not as quiet as most PLAN fans think. They certainly have installed modern sonar, combat system and weaponry and can make patrols now, but they are still lacking in that one important areas.

Keep in mind, kilo is one of most exported subs in the world. USN should have to problem if it wants to profile this ship. Even if the Chinese kilo doesn't leave port, USN should know very well how quiet or noisy is that sub from other sources.

Yuan is designed on top of kilo, it should be improved, i find it hard to believe its noisier than than the kilo even in transit.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

The fact of the matter is Kilo submarines rarely leave the ports.

Yuan is designed on top of Song. From my discussions with submariners, Yuan does not represent generational improvement over Song in acoustic signature. So, it would not surprise me if Yuan is noisier than Kilo. I do think it has better combat system, sonar and weapon system though.

Feng I think you took too seriously article from David which doesn't name the source of his article . Have you been inside the yuan yourself ? I doubt it and who is your submarine friend maybe one of those China basher.

You are so accommodating to those China basher even without proof . because you read Chinese BBS doesn't mean you are expert buddy. You are just computer science guy from Waterloo what do you know about submarine tech?

Yuan 1A is designed with AIP, and at that stage, they already had the kilo sub and can be used as a reference point. How bout Yuan 1B which is made to look like a large kilo?

Regarding the article, something doesn't seem right. China is able to make much progress in military aviation, space/ railway tech, supercomputers and other stuffs, but she just can't get pass noise reduction technology? It's not like it's some kind of mysterious anti gravity technology anymore more than stealth fighter technology.

On more important news than the bashing of Chinese sub. the rumor is that China successfully test JL2. first posted by Houshanghai at PakDef

JL2 sub-lanuching ICBM succeeded in tests on December,26th,2010

well, leaks from CD:

it is widely reported that JL2 sub-lauching ICBM succeeded in tests on December,26th,2010.

6 JL2 were launched continuously in the test and all succeeded.

It depends on which speeds the submarines are going at. A Yuan going at 20 knots might be nosier than the Kilo (on the other hand, that weird ONI chard seemed to indicate the exact opposite)

6 JL2 launched ! .. wow that's impressive.

And some people still believe China only have 12 DF-31A ! .. :) that's hilarious
