Is it possible to get her size estimate from this photo?

"Qing class submarine sets sail."
OT: English is a funny language: To say of a submarine it is setting sail is even more ridiculous than saying the same of a surface ship.

I still don't think this is an SSB.

I also dont think that this is a SSB. So many resources to develop a advanced platform with just one unit built just for weapon testing? no, i dont think thats true. Unless the chinese are very dumb.

Besides, the submarine has torpedo hatchs in the bow. What does an SSB need them?

That's like asking why an SSBN needs torpedo hatches... self defense of course.

Now while I do not believe this sub is necessarily an SSB or a test sub, it's not inconceivable. We have no idea how advanced this submarine is, and goodness knows it might not only be used for testing ballistic missiles but also torpedos (which gives necessity for torpedo hatches). IF this is replacing the aged golf, it makes sense for it to be modern enough to accomodate future modifications

from the shape and size, i think its actually an attack submarine. maybe it can carry torpedo fired cruise missiles, does the Chinese have this technology yet?

Does C-802 qualify as cruise missile? Block 3 harpoon able to reconfigure into land attack cruise missiles.

PLAN has demonstrate they have the technology for tube torpedo launch attack missile. So I think PLAN even without it at the moment is not far off from mastering it.

C-802 is a low altitude anti-ship missile, its path finding radar guides it from just 2-5 meters above the surface of the water and its propulsion require a lot of fuel. unlike a cruise missile which relies more on a small turbo jet engine if im not mistaken, it has a far longer range due to the extra lift given by its stubby foldable wings and its longer fuel burn. the PLA already have its own cruise missile, there is no point in put more research into turning a antiship missile into a cruise missile. if they really want to, im sure it can be used as some kind of beachhead breaker to take out bunkers and command centers on the front line during an amphibious assault. just my thought though...

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

There is a difference between what Chinese submarine launches YJ-82 and what is offered on the export market C-802. I believe YJ-82 is just the submarine launched version of YJ-8A, which uses a rocket motor rather than a jet engine. But if they want to, it shouldn't be that difficult to create a version of KD-88 for submarine launch. I don't know if that exists yet.
