Thanks for the info. I'll check it out. I can't walk into a toy store or hobby shop in my area these days and find a good model.

or some of the others I spoke of above, you will find so many good models that you will not know what to do with them all. They also sell all sorts of accessories, tools, etc.

For tools I recommend a good exacto knife (the type you can replace the blades on), a couple of excellent pair of wire cutters, one for plastic and one for metal, a dremel tool with cutting, sanding, grinding, drilling, buffing, and other attachments, small scissors, several pairs of various shaped fine point tweezers, a set of picks of various sorts, a set of fine point, small files, a good set of fine point brushes from very fine points to maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide, and then several organizing trays to organize paints, putty, glues, brushes, spare parts, etc.

LATEST UPDATE: Completing the Airwing - April 19th, 2012

Wow, the entire airwing has taken about as long as the rest of the ship together. I had purchased some additional SU-33s to be painted and configured as J-15s and some extra helos. My airwing thus ended up being 14 J-15 fighters, 4 KA-28 ASW helos, 2 KA-31 AEW helos, 2 Z-9 ASW/SAR helos, and 3 Z-8 AEW, transport helos. That's 25 aircraft altogehter. The first part was to build them. The aircraft had 18 pieces each and so were a pretty good model themselves for each. The helos generally had 11 pieces each. So, for all of the aircraft, there were abpiut 350 pieces...many of them very small and delicate.

Then, painting the aircraft, finishing the smaller detail partsa, and adding the decals and rotors for the helos was able to be accomplished.

All of the above took almost 4 weeks to accomplish, working on it after work and on weekends when I could. We did have a five day break when I took a trip with my wife down to San Diego for one of our daughter's weddings which also gave me the opportunity to

Those J-15/Su-33 looks quite nice. Are the wings actually foldable or do you fix some of them in place in the raised position?

You had the option of either building them folded or unfolded.

Same with the helos. Either with Rotors folded back, or ready for flight. I'll have four helos in landing positions ready for take off, the rest folded and parked on deck or in the hangar.

I'll have eight J-15s ready for take off, probably four at the forward launch positions and the other four arranged around the aft portion on the deck, the rest will be folded and either parked, on elevators, or in the hangar.

I hope to have the aircraft finished with a dull coat and on the deck this weekend. I am looking at trying to fab some missiles for the aircraft ready for take off...will have to look at that.

BTW, for those interested, I tok some pictures of my completed USS New Jersey, BB-62, with the modern configuration (now a museum) that I built 20 years ago. I decided to make her a part of my US Strike group.

Here they are:

I liked the (modernized) New Jersey so much that I built two models of her (one small and one medium)!. As well as one big one of her sister ship Missouri as she appeared in WWII.

Yes they are master Jeff, but don't get so busy modeling that you miss the first air ops on the Varyag, the engineer gave us a play by play the other night as she came out of the harbor, that was actually Vary agxiting. Any way exciting times for you naval buffs and its cool to be a part of sharing all the fun with my new brothers, I am eagerly anticipating the first air ops and watching all this with you guys is so much more fun!

Take some pics of that big New Jersey and lets compare notes. Was it the Tamiya model. Trumpeter has one out too.

Thanks, I was finishing the carrier today (except for the people I intend to paint up and put all over it), and am going to post the pics of the finished PLAN Carrier tomorrow. She looks good with her airwing on there, the forks and various deck equipment.

Followed every bit of it...just lurking that evening. I wont miss it I promise, been watching, note taking, documenting and waiting for nine years and will not miss it now...but will finish the model of the same too. Stay tuned here tomorrow and I will get the pics of the finished product (less the very small personnel) tomorrow.

LOL! Sorry, but not likely. Probably loose my clearance and all...they have other folks uniquely qualified to make that trip if the PLAN ever offers, and it certainly would not be me. Hehehe...but it'd be fun just the same.
