Re: 1/350 Scale Model, Trumpeter Kit# 5617, PLA Navy Aircraft Carrier

I say the model kit company got about 99% right on the Liaoning.
They did. I have had to move some communication antennae around a bit. Am changing some of the deck outline painting, had to add a FN-3000L they missed on the starboard bow sponson, and am having to add the "16" pennant number. Other than those small changes, they were dead on.

Also, the kit did not come with a hangar deck (a lot of them do not, including the

very nice build of PLA Navy Aircraft Carrier!
I like it a lot.

what is the main difference with Kuznetsov beside the paint schemes,
do you know?

I plan to convert this kit to Kuznetsov, since IMHO it is more colorful.
Do you think it is possible?
Please advise.
Just buy the Kusnetsov kit made by Trumpeter. This kit is derived from that kit with additional sprues and parts added to represent the differences.

I intend to build an entire Russian group too and will buy that kit to do so for the Kuznetsov.

Here's a link to one of the online stores here in the states

...you can find them cheapest on the China stores like here

Here in the states, with the cost of shipping, it ends up being about the same cost...but if you are over there, you will pay a lot less.

hehehe...well, on my Enterprise its going to be F-18Cs, F-18Es, F-18Fs, E2-Cs, Greyhounds, EA-6Bs, Sea Kings, Sea Hawks,, and maybe a converted EA-18G or two.

Now, when they finally come out with a USS Ford...and I am sure they will soon...I will have Superhornets (24), Growlers (5), Super-Hawkeyes (E2-Ds) (5), X47Bs (8), F-35Cs (24) as well as a few Greyhounds (4) and Sea Hawks (6). I expect that will be the airwing for the foreseeable future (it's probably 6-8 aircraft heavy), but beyond that, my kids will probably have to build it.

On ther America, when that comes out, I intend to build it in the Sea Control version (I already have a Wasp Class, the Iwo Jima, that I will build in the Amphibious and Air Assault mode) and will include Ospreys which I will build in 2 variants (ASW - 4 and AEW - 4), F-35Cs (20) and Seahawks for ASW and SAR (6). That's 34 aircraft on that baby, but she will be outfitted better than almost any other carrier out there outside the US nuclear carriers.

Anyhow, that's the plan, but the Ford and the America are a few years down the line. As you can see on my main

PLAN CV-16, LIoaning in 1/350 Scale completed to commissoned condition

Now that the PRC, PLAN CV-16 Liaoning has been commissioned and in service for a number of months, I thought I would update my 1/350 scale model carrier to its latest configuration. This involved moving the antennae from their original positions, keeping four forward, two on each side (port and starboard) and then moving all of the others along the starboard side of the flight deck. It also involved putting the new style, shadowed "16" pennant number on the front of the flight deck at the end of the ski jump, and just aft of the bow on the port and starboard sides of the vessel. Here is how she looks now as a commissioned Chinese aircraft carrier:

Re: 1/350 Scale Model, Trumpeter Kit# 5617, PLA Navy Aircraft Carrier

I say the model kit company got about 99% right on the Liaoning.
Actually, Trumpeter did a very nice job.

They took the KUznetsov, which is the sister ship, and simply added additional sprues of parts for the new island, the weaponry, the aircraft, etc. Basically anything that was different exteriorially from the Kuznetsov.

As I point out in my review and build, there were onbly a few things I needed to change.

Trumpeter and its affiliates have emerged as one of the premier model building companies in the world. It is true Tamiya and Fuijimi and Airfix still produce great models...and Revell too...but nobody has the selection that Trumpeter has, and their 1/350 scale ship models, particularly the later models that come with the Photo Etched parts included, are about as good as they get.

A large majority of the vessels I am buying (and many of the aircraft when I buy those) are from Trumpeter. Many times, I can get the part from a Chinese retailer and have it shipped over here for less than the same model retails over here.

As to this model, I believe I got the first one qavailable in the States. No one had them here retail, in stores or online, when I purchased this kit from Lucky Models in China. it was the first day it showed up on their site too...because Trumpeter had announced it late in 2011, and in Feb. it became available in China and I ordered it immediately.

Nice comparison between the two vessels in 1/350 scale. This essentially the same comparison as the CV-16 would show against a Nimitz class carrier. Thought it should go on this thread.

Why I don't do RC modeling...could not avoid this temptation.

Here's why I do not do RC naval vessel models. I would not be able to overcome the temptation to do just this...and it would be an expensive hobby. But it is pretty neat to watch someone else spend their money doing it, LOL!

Additionally, I have the RN Lusty ready to build in 1/350 and now have two Duke Class FFGs and two Daring Class DDGs as well as an Astute SSN. Going to be a very nice "fill in," CSG until someone makes a 1/350 scale Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier...hopefully Airfix.

With my PLAN CSG centered on the Liaoning nearing completion, as well as my US Navy CSG (centered on the USS Enterprise), later this year it will be nice to have all three set out on a large table or other flat surface to compare all of them.

Re: 1/350 Scale Model, Trumpeter Kit# 5617, PLA Navy Aircraft Carrier

Soon I will have enough vessels completed in 1/350 scale for each Navy to show an entire CSG together for both the US Navy and the PLAN and compare them. When I do, I will post a new thread for it.

Until then, for this PLAN, CV-16, Liaoning build, here are a few more pics of the two carriers (USS Enterprise, CVN-65 and PLAN Liaoning, CV-16) together for comparison purposes:

I liked the (modernized) New Jersey so much that I built two models of her (one small and one medium)!. As well as one big one of her sister ship Missouri as she appeared in WWII.
Norfolk, I liked that model too!

I built one of the modernized USS New Jersey, BB-62, in 1/350 scale by Tamiya back in about 1991 or 1992...over 20 years ago. But have kept her in good shape ever since.

I have a page for her build on my site:
