Re: 1/350 Scale Model, Trumpeter Kit# 5617, PLA Navy Aircraft Carrier

Continuing now with progress on my 1/350 scale PLAN Carrier, the ex-Varyag since the 14th:

Finishing the main deck and hull

There was still a lot of work to be done with the main deck. Quite a bit of instrumentation and various equipment. All of the antennae, all of the life rafts and various ship's boats, and finally all of the hand railing for the sponsons, on various levels of the hull and on the deck itself, as well as the webbing.

The boats, life rafts, instrumentation, antennae, webbing, netting, and handrails were made up of probably 300 or more pieces.

When these were complete, it took several days to attach them all and then painstakingly cut all of railings and nettings and attach them. Lots of touch up painting as I went. Some people install most of the parts and pieces and even handrailing before painting...I prefer to paint as I go, installing painted pieces and then touching up any necessary areas either from paint affected by the glue, or glue spots on the paint itself.

Then it was time to attach the Island. The vessel itself still needs the rudders, props, shafs and supports, but otherwise is complete. I have yet to add the decals on the deck, and there are a lot of them which will be painstaking but very gratifying. Then, we'll build the air wing and deck vehicles and equipment, paint them, add decals, and place them. But for right now, she's looking pretty good.

Status as March 18, 2012

This is where I have gotten to date. My plan over the next few weeks is the following, and I will update this posting as I go along:

- By March 25th, 2012: Complete props, shafys, and rudders.Complete all decals and painting of main flight deck.
- By April 16th, 2012: Complete all aircraft and deck equipment building, painting, decals, and aircraft and equipment placement.
- By April 23rd, 2012: Paint and place all all 1/350 scale personnel on the carrier, complete carrier and place on stand.

At that point I will be finished with my PLAN Navy Carrier from Trumpeter. At that point I will do my priniple PLAN Escort for the carrier, Trumpeter's DDG-170, Lanshou Type 052C destroyer. This is the Chinese Arleigh Burke-like destroyer with PARS, battle management and VLS air defense missiles. After that, I will build Hobby Boss's PLAN SSN attack submarine, the PLAN SSN-405, ChangZheng5, a Type 091 Han class SSN, for escort duties. Then, rather than build the other three surface combatants (Trumpeter's DDG-168, Guangzhou; DDG-139, Ningbo; and FFG-570, Huangshan) as part of the Chinese Carrier Strike Group, I will build the initial portion of the US Navy Carrier Strike Group.

That US CSG will be centered on Tamiya's 1/350 scale USS Enterprise, CVN-65. I will build Trumpeter's USS Bunker Hill, CG-52 an AEGIS Cruiser, Trumpeter's DDG-82, USS Lassen an AEGIS destroyer, and the Los Angeles Class attack sumbmarine, Testor's SSN-764, USS Boise (It was actaully the San Juan, but I built and marked it as the USS Boise) which I have already completed.

You're a combination of craftsman and one-man production-line, Jeff.:D

No doubt and the carrier is looking great, I'm sure you must be proud of her, thats the beauty of modeling, just like the real thing only portable. Modeling is very inspiring for young people as well theres something about putting your hands on something, I can still remember my Dad picking up a toy airplane he had given me, and showing me an immellman turn, loop, and a roll and explaining each to me.

I'm not trying to be a wise guy here Jeff, I hope they didn't sell you a model kit of a Russian aircraft carrier and just change the packaging to "PLAN Carrier". Did you find the pieces to be pretty much authentic looking as the real deal? I'm just curious that's all.

No problem...thanks for asking.

Read the initial several postings on the thread where I describe the model and building it. I speak to this in there directly.

The main tooling is the Kuznetsov tooling from the Trumpeter model...but believe me, after all the tracking I have done the last ten years. I know the differences.

Trumpeter rendered an authentic PLAN model. All of the changes to the island, to the deck, to the equipment and landing systems on the deck, to the weapons systems, sensors air wing (including J-15s, Z-8s, Z-9s, KA-27s and KA-31s) , etc. are authentic and correctly modeled except for two errors that I point out here, and emailed into Trumpeter and the retailer I bought it from.

If you read through it, you will see what they are...that's my quiz of the thread fo you. Find out what they are and let me know.

Thanks Norfolk. She's coming together nicely and the railings (which are tiny and fine made...and easy to mess up) really add an authentic look. I did use the Kuznetsove Gold Metal Model kit for this because there is not a Chinese one yet. Though some of the sensors are completely different in that kit (the photo etch parts that came with the kit did cover those) the handrailing is pretty much the same and I used all of it.

Also the ladders and stairs look really good.

Now it's on to the deck markings and decals...and they will really make the ship look very nice...then onto that Air Wing I spoke of. Looking forward to it and as Air Force Brat says, there's a lot of sense of pride and accomplishment involved in this.

I am teaching two grandsons to build as I go. They are each working on models of their own with their papa on weekends, which I help them with as I am working on mine.

I have great memories of my grandfather, working in his shop, and all the things he taught me, from woodworking to fishing.:)

I built models as a kid too...it taught me patience, attention to detail, how to read and follow technical instructions, and a lot of self respect and sense of accomplishement.

All very good traits for later in life when you are out in your trade or profession and earning a living for a family.

I'm glad to pass those kinds of things on.

I also teach them to shoot, hunt (though after my cancer and surgeries I am not as good at that as I used to be), and especially about the US Constitution and the underlying moral and republican principles that form the foundation for true liberty and the true free market and how they are meant to work, and how that majic produces prosperity and lifts all who desire to become engaged and be lifted...and the dangers of forgetting those principles.

Not to be too political...it's really more about fundamental principle, but if you're interested, read this article I had published in several journals and online publications:

Anyhow...being a grandpa is a lot of fun and I am thankful to have suvived to be able to enjoy it and make the most of it.

Great Fun

I will start the deck marking in the next day or two on the PLAN Carrier. I've decided to do the Enterprise next as long as I am working on big models. Once this one is done and I get going a ways into that one, I'll post a seperate thread regarding it. In the mean time I will keep updating this one until its finished.
