PLAN Fleet supply vessels

This year alone we have seen a 50% increase in numbers of Type 903 replenishment tankers, a much needed boast to the PLAN, this will mean less wear and tear on the current fleet, more availability and missions further away as they can afford to keep more and more of these tankers out at sea for longer periods of time

Good they are but really what China needs is something in the class of the 885, 37,000+ tons, something like what the Royal Navy has ordered in the form of the MARS tankers which are close to 40,000 tons, that is the tonnage China should be aiming for its replenishment tankers, more volume more lift and more versatile, like having the ability to carry weapons and ammunitions enough to replenish a carrier

Rumor has it that there will be four 35,000 ton replenishment ships by 2020.

I do not think they will build that many in this time-frame, but I do expect to see two. They will then have one Chinese built AOR per destroyer flotilla - plus 885.

how sure were you that 584 was commissioned?

I was quite sure 584 was commissioned on 4 July, when it was at Wusong with flags all over.

But I am afraid that I find it increasingly difficult to understand when PLAN commissions ships. A case in point is the ZHENGZHOU that is sitting at Dinghai. If the ship is not in working order, it should return to Jiangnan; if it is, it should be commissioned as 151.

Also, the commissioning date 1 July for 596 and 597, coinciding with the 16th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China, is wholly artificial, as they had been operational for months.

I heard 3, but it does look like they are going to build larger replenishment ships that are designed for longer endurance and supplying larger fleet than Type 903.

That's fair. I think all of us had that impression. My original comments were for posters that put pictures up and pronounce them to be something, but they are actually really old photos or photos of another ship. Not that I disagreed the photo is actually 890.

If true then it's great news a new larger replenishment tanker is on the works, really no suprise they probably realised a larger tanker was needed when they were doing Gulf of Aden missions
