If China's going to build a carrier, I am 99.9% sure it will include a ski jump, for one reason, the chinese carrier is going to be based on the Varyag hands down, second the planned Chinese carrier aircraft are deffenetly going to need a ski jump to take off.
Not entirely sure on this one. I'm sure there are modifications that can be done to su-33ub so that it can take off from a catapult. Also, if China develops its own carrier fighter, it would take in consideration of the catapult factor. Also, China reportedly had been flying fighters from catapult launch and jet ski. What does that mean? We won't know what kind of carrier we will see until it comes out. Make no assumptions. Also, it's worth noting that there are reports that China in the past half a year or so have put electronics and such in Varyag, but later they took it out all the same day. Same happened to certain other components. Of course, those photos are not in the public domain, but just more things to think about.

I think they will ultimately do both. The Varyag will end up being commissioned and serve not only as a trainer, but to augment the indigenous carriers the Chinese build.

Here's a closer look at the Varyag with the primer (zincchromate?) on her decks.

If that is indeed some sort of zinccromiate..and I think it is..That is not something you slap down on the floor of a future casino. That stuff last a long time. the ship is being readied for duty. Flying the colors of the PRC!

Go China!:china:

I agree with Jeff that the ship will be used as a trainer then an active duty CV.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

Well this isent the fate of varyag, But the fact that the Minsk park company went out of business Migth imply that the marketing idea of amusment-park-aircraft carriers wasent as succsefull as planned, therefore any future conversions of such migth not be around...

...but going out of busines can mean lots of other things, so no reason for celebration yet. If new companyes emerge around the same busines idea, and Minks ending down into bottom, only replacement would be varyag...

China Plans to Make Russian Aircraft Carrier Into Artificial Reef

A Russian aircraft carrier converted into a theme park in the southern Chinese town of Shenzhen could find its final resting place as an artificial reef in Hong Kong waters, DPA news agency reported on Tuesday.

The agency quoted an article in the China Morning Post daily which said that the plan to turn the 40,000-tonne ’Minsk’ into a marine life haven had been proposed by marine specialist Charlie Frew after the unsuccessful auction of the ship earlier this year.

Frew has suggested towing the 271-metre-long ship 10 km from its current location to the waters off Hong Kong’s eastern New Territories and sinking it between two islands near Sai Kung.

’If the ship was sunk in position between the islands, it would lead to a rapid expansion in fish stocks, would encourage the growth of native corals and provide a focal point for the rejuvenation of underwater life for the entire eastern coastline of Hong Kong,’ he said.

Frew has asked several government offices, including the marine and environmental protection departments, to help acquire the vessel.

The Minsk, with a complement of 32 aircraft, was launched in 1975 but was retired in 1993 after an accident. The vessel was later sold to the Shenzhen Minsk Aircraft Carrier Industry Co, which created a theme park, Minsk World, around the carrier.

The company recently went out of business, and the carrier was put up for auction with a reserve price of 128 million yuan ($16 million), but failed to attract a single bid.

’Imagine the economic windfall and recreational attraction,’ Frew said, touting his plan. ’It would be the largest ship sunk in the Asia-Pacific region. The Minsk could do more good at the bottom of the sea than it ever did afloat.’

Now that's some news...If the PLAN does indeed sink the Minsk there is much information to be learned by that action...You know guys..the old "How to sink a carrier". If the PLAN towed the ship out to sea then blasted it with missiles just to see what it would take to sink her. Much like the USN did with a real CV the ex-USS America CV-66 last May. Cameras & sensors could be placed on board to record the action. Of course water tight intregrity should be set before the sinking. The ship would have to perhaps be sunk in deeper waters . Anybody think the PLAN would do this?

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

It depends how close to shore this might be...probably not. To create the reef just right, the chip needs to be sunk and a certain position and location, something that can be done with missles. what it doesnt sink and stays half-afloat? now we have a problem

Well I certainly hope Varyag won't be used as a replacement for an amusement park. I'm sure that most of us will be very disapointed if Varyag ends up under the sea or in some park. I'm still convinced that Varyag will be eventually be used for military purposes. What do you guys think?

Well is you read carefully, it said Minsk, not varyag. I dont know what would be the point of painting varyag up, and even getting its elevator to work if all your going to do is sink it.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

Obviously. All of the construction we've seen so far seems to point to military use. Besides, wouldn't it just seem a little illogical for a nation like China to take a perfectly good aircraft carrier and put a marry-go-round on it? By the way, who exactly owns the Varyag? The PLAN, or some private company? Or some private company that is owned by the PLAN?

Well there you go. I would think if the PLAN wanted to cause doubt about the Varyag's future they wouldn't mske it so obvious. But then, maybe a retired PLAN admiral is the exact sort of person who would be interested in having an aircraft carrier-theme park.

This story inspired me to see if I could by a naval vessel of my own. However, I was not able to find an old Russian submarine or an aircraft carrier on ebay.
