Re: What will the 1st PLAN Carrier Air Wing look like?

In the case of Kundetzov and Varyang its likely that the finished product would have been identical in dimensions had the Russians completed Varyang. But as Liaoning the PLAN conducted a massive redesign as the hull they received was far from complete its likely that as part of installs of engines and Chinese critical systems the Liaoning hanger ended up losing some hight.
Well, in this case, the explanation is pretty simple.

I screwed up.

Both of them should be the 7.2m height.

At 5.7 meters, a J-15 would not fit as its height is 5.9 meters.

As it is, they have several feet of clearance over the top of their tail.

Good point! Those air jaws are amazing! Acrobatic and ferocious! The image of the shark on the plane does look like one of those air jaws jumping out of the ocean and hunting. Only air jaws adopt such curled up body position while in the air.

Ääähhhm ... Sorry, but what's an Air Jaw !???

That's it! A lot of times, the shark will leap completely out of water, catch the seal and even make a 180 deg turn on the way down. Amazing. Apparently, sharks in the ocean only around South Africa do this kind of thing. Note that I didn't say "only sharks in the ocean around South Africa". Since sharks travel long distances in the ocean sometimes thousands of miles, there is no reason to believe that only "local sharks" do it. So apparently, any shark that travels to the South Africa begins to do this and stop doing it once it gets to somewhere else, say California or Miami. It might be seal-dependent. It's possible that the seals in South Africa is too agile and the sharks need to adopt something so dramatic to catch one. I don't know...

Rumored J-15 specifications are :

Maximum speed: M2.17
Load for weapons: 6.5 tonnes
Combat range: 1270 kilometers
Folded wing span: 8.4 meters
Unfolded wing span: 12.7 meters

Thank you..

rumored??.. Ok IMO that combat range is rumored. Is that combat range flying from the ski ramp or flying from ashore? If so that is amazing. That's more than 500km greater than the combat radius of a Super Hornet launching with the aid of a catapult. Amazing.

How do they do that? Must have some fairy dust.

All kidding aside. I just don't believe that launched from a ski-ramp that the J-15 has a combat radius as rumored.

Just my opinion.

IMO, the specifications are for land-based j-15s.

Here's the versions of my pictures that show a more accurate hanger arrangement of aircraft for the Liaoning and the Kuznetsov:

Hi Jeff, it looks like the helicopter representations in your diagrams are Z-9s, do you have any with Z-8s?

My guesstimate based on your diagrams is that 12 J-15s, 6 Z-8s, and 6 Z-9s can all fit in the hangar at the same time and would make sense operationally. One wing of J-15s, all Z-9s for anti-sub, 4x Z-8s for AEW and 2x Z-8s for transport or SAR. Or should the ratio for AEW vs transpot/SAR Z-8s be flipped?

You're right and you know you are, I would imagine the actual combat radius with an A2A load is about half that, possibly 800km, which is actually plenty if all your doing is flying top CAP on the CBG, since those J-15s are basically flying daytime VFR at present, that's not a problem, it is simply an operating limitation,,,,,,, lots of folks in the real world launch aircraft with a partial fuel load out. The Flanker holds a lot of fuel, if they depart a land-base to fly out to the carrier, its nice to have those long legs, but there is no point in flying around with twice the fuel you need to accomplish a particular mission, NONE! When you compromise performance or safety why would you, why do you think we see those F-86s blowing those drop tanks when they spot the migs or whatever, that extra gas can get you shot down, whether internal or external. When you jettison that fuel your thrust to weight ratio can go up 10%, and that is a kick in the pants, you can climb better and turn tighter because you have also decreased your wing loading. watch your six...... brat

Re: What will the 1st PLAN Carrier Air Wing look like?

12 x J15 in the hanger 12 x J15 on the deck 25 aircraft easy fit

Push it to 15 a piece and you have 30

Squeeze in 18 and 18 and you have 36

So it's 24,30 or 36

So either 2-3 Sqaudrons

Next carrier will be easily 3 Sqaudrons
