Re: J-15 Carrier Multirole Fighter thread

Actually, I'm still waiting for the appearance of the AESA-equipped J-15B, after which all J-15 units will be retrofitted with the J-16's powerful AESA radar and finally bring its performance up to that of the F/A-18E Super Hornet. Rumors are that it will make a debut in 2014 and the retrofit will be done by 2015-2016.

Do you mean electronic ability? Where did you get this information? thanks.

I think he is referring to the radar capability specifically, resulting from a new AESA radar they plan to install.

Re: What will the 1st PLAN Carrier Air Wing look like?

not even in some sort of surge configuration will liaoning field 36 j15 plus helicopters on top of that. there's simply no room for that. 24 j15 plus 8-9 helos, on the other hand, sounds plausible. even 30 j15 (three 10 plane regiments?) plus 8 or so helos would be theoretically possible. but i doubt such numbers will be pursued.
In a large war scenario, they could.

It would take up all the room in the hanger, and every spotting point on deck, with wings and rotors folded, plus aircraft spotted on deck prepared to launch. With all of that, you can get 23 aircraft and helos on the flight deck. You would then have 25 more in the hanger. The original Russian design was set up for a maximum of 36 aircraft and 12 helicopters and I do not believe the Chinese did anything to the flight deck or the hanger to reduce it..

Yes, it would be very, very tight. And yes, it would also be very, very rare, if at all.

As it is, I believe two squadrons of J-15s will be the standard...and perhaps the PLAN will limit it to that. I am just speaking of what is possible...not necessarily what they will do.

Re: J-15 Carrier Multirole Fighter thread

I never thought the aerodynamic ability of Flankers when compared to Super Hornets was ever in doubt.

To me performance from the flight deck is what counts with naval aircraft. We know what a Super Hornet can do. Endurance, speed payload etc. IMO we have only "Guesstimates" what a J-15 can do.

Re: J-15 Carrier Multirole Fighter thread

Just a thought...

The official (?) name of the J-15 being 飞鲨; thus translated as "Flying Shark" (飞 = fly, 鲨 = shark). Just wondered if the designers were thinking of another name instead.

I.e. "Flying Shark" ... was translated from "飞鲨", but was "飞鲨" translated from "Air Jaw"?

Another word, is it possible the designers have intended to name the J-15 after the white pointer sharks off the South African coast (aka "Air Jaws"), but the direct translation resulted it being referred as "Flying Sharks" instead?

PS. Just do a google search for "Air Jaws" and you are likely to come upon photos that explain why those whitepointers are called "Air Jaws". Kind of reminded me of the logo on the test plane, 554!

If that is the case, they have selected a fine name for this plane!

Well, just a though.

Those are rumors which claim to have official backing, which I doubted at first, but do have a pretty nice history of credibility to them.

Apparently what happened was that the original plan to install AESA radar on J-15 was pushed back due to budget and time concerns, so instead they decided to start doing it in one of the later batches. While it is clear that all J-15 units are fully capable of combat, I do believe that it is the upgraded J-15s that will be the first air wing aboard the CV-16. Admiral Yin Zhuo subtly implied that he expects the J-15 to fully match, or even possibly exceed, the Super Hornet in air to air combat.

This, I believe, was the same situation with the Super Hornet.

Rumored J-15 specifications are :

Maximum speed: M2.17
Load for weapons: 6.5 tonnes
Combat range: 1270 kilometers
Folded wing span: 8.4 meters
Unfolded wing span: 12.7 meters

while so many aircraft could potentially be put on deck, hangar can not hold 25 planes and be operational. i hope images such as these weren't the basis for that claim as they're pure fantasy images. such crowded hangar would never happen.
