It will certainly be interesting to see her once she's finished refit and moving under her own power!

Yue Fei's death has always been a cautionary tale on the danger of blind loyalty. It's not about him putting down peasant rebellions, it's about him obeying an order that he KNOWS will lead to his death, and the ruin of everything he had accomplished.

That's exactly what makes him the tragic hero that he is. He knew he would be killed, but he still went back. We need to realize that ancient people had a different moral standard than modern people. they valued loyalty above everything else. The same can also be said of Yang's family in the same Song dynasty. they fought to the last man even though the govn't treated them badly. And that's why people admire these tragic heroes. Their loyalty would not be wavered by anything...

I really don't think the ship would be named after a person. First of all, the CCP is against personal cult. Even at the height of all personal cult during 60's and 70's, there was nothing named after Mao, Zhou or any other famous people. This compares with what happens normally in the West, where many landmarks are named after famous people. We get Lincoln St, Washington Ave, etc in almost everything town.

even in ancient China, there was a thing against naming something after a person. Name some famous place that's named after a person. As a matter of fact, it was illegal to have the same name as the emperor. In ancient China, it was a custom for all siblings and cousins to share part of their given name as a sign of their generation. However, when the crown prince becomes an emperor, all his brothers and sisters and cousins have to change their generation names to eliminate any part of their names that is the same as the new emperor. As having something similar to the leader was thought as offensive. So, I think, this is partially why not many famous names have been used to name famous landmarks. Again, this compares to the West where famous names are used all the time to name landmarks. You can walk through all the major cities in China and not find one little back alley named after a person. This of course compares to all the Washington Ave, Lincoln St., City of Houston, City of Austin, etc...

So for those who insist to name the ship after a person, they seem not to be familiar with Chinese culture.

How about "Zhongshan Gongyuan"? (Sun Yat-sen Parks)

in fact, there were some place and things named after a person that we don't know. Guangzhou named after the person Guangxin 广信who governed Guangzhou in Han dynasty, Guangdong and Guangxi followed after the naming.
after 1949,PRC leaders had made a decision that prohibited naming place after a person, include province,city,town,street.... Mao led to make this decision. but the old naming place, street before 1949, still have remained, that's why we see so many cities still have the name " Zhongshan " street, park, the DR Sun Yat-sen birth city, it still called " Zhongshan city" in Guandong province.
but chinese leaders never prohibited PLAN naming person's name for ship, we have known " Zhenghe " and " Shichang " for PLAN ship.

Yes it will and with these doctored photos, I am trying to show what that will look like. When she is complete and has an air wing on board, with the other capabilities the PLAN has developed, they will be capable of putting a quite strong carrier group to sea.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen's name being widely used because he's the undisputed father of modern China, even the PRC heralded him so and you'd see his portrait at Beijing on national day every year.

Now as for naming rules for PLAN, there's indeed rules, sorry can't find one in English...

But in relation to the topic here, read below:
1. the naming rules have been written into law in 1978
2. LCI (landing craft, infantry) named after rivers
3. Cruisers named after Direct-controlled municipality - that'd be Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing
4. Training vessels named after individuals
5. Anything above crusier grade will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Pretty much, in order to avoid mix-up and to have a sizable pool of candidates, the final name is still a wild guess at this point.

What about those navy commanders described in the novel Shui Hu, which perhaps has the most naval battles described in a novel.

I think Shui Hu is taboo in China. Of the 4 great literary classics, 2 have had a new, high budget TV series made (3 Kingdoms & Journey to the West), but Shui Hu and Dream of Red Mansions have not. Shui Hu is politically charged, while Red Mansions is too draggy.

On the issue of naming PRC's carriers, it will be quite a new development if they name it after famous people instead of cities/provinces. I was thinking that possible names include Confucius, Sun Zi and the mythical "3 Sovereigns and 5 Emperors".

And there's not just the problem with name, but ship number as well - with the current system, the 1st digit represent what type of vessel it is. And by the current rule, none has been reserved for anything above destroyer type vessels...unless they going to include "0" in the 1st digit, in their next revision of the code.

And if the Varyag going to sea this year, this revision should've been done already, or awaiting final approval.

What??? The freshly made and brand new Shui Hu is now being shown on CCTV as we speak. I think they just finished showing the new Dream of Red Mansions not long ago. The only novel that does not have the new series yet is the Journey to the West, which is scheduled to come on TV in April.
