Feb. 27, 2012. The 11th Chinese naval escort flotilla, consisting of destroyer "Qingdao", frigate "Yantai" and comprehensive supply ship "Huishanhu", departed from Qingdao on Monday for the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.

Of course they are sure that 113 works fine - otherwise they would not send it to the Arabian Sea. It is after all more than a year ago that it finished the mid-life update at Qingdao-Jiaonon Navy Yard. PLAN does not (yet?) do long-duration shake-down cruises, that is for mature blue water navies.

this may sound like a overkill but i think PLAN should think about sending a Submarine, it would be massively beneifical to the crews if for example they sailed through the Suez Canal, while on the way there they would pass through 2 very narrow choke points, the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the Suez Canel, these are very difficult to navigate and only for the very experienced submarine commanders, if it was a nuclear submarine the pressure would be even higher

also its a high intenisty area, with threats of terrorism and piracy, again wouldd provided unparaelled experience to the crews

all Submarines must pass the straits while surfaced, then they could dive deep into the Red Sea, the whole operation would be great for China and the lessons learnt brought back and taught to others

Last year Type 054A frigates crossed Suez Canal, that must have been fun!

IMO for China to send subs, two conditions should be met:
1- A good reason, not anti-piracy this reason is too weak, may be something along the line of joint exercise with Pakistani.
2- There must be a requirement, IMO in the foreseeable future any sea conflict China will be facing should be close to the mainland coast, thus more patrols by conventional subs around the South and East China Sea and let them gain experience is probably a better option and at a higher requirement.
PS: How do you know they have not sent any sub on one of these patrols?:p

By the way how many auxiliaries has the PLAN sent so far? Because it seems they always sent Qiandaohu or Weishanhu, can't they let others get some experience as well?

Unless there's a mission on the pipeline to flatten the pirate's nests with SLCM (wait, do PLAN have that in the first place?) or commando style rescue ops (again, PLAN still ain't got such capability), or planning for war with somebody in the Indian Ocean, sending subs is useless - after all, the essential factor of counter-piracy is police action, show of force so the pirates would think twice before they hit any ship; submarine just can't provide the "presence" factor in the equation, period.
