Re: Somali pirates and Chinese navy

The latest news is that the vessel was being attacked by pirates but wasn't hijacked, currently it has joined the 7th expedition fleet's 293th escort convoy.
That's good news. If this is so, I am glad the sailors and ship are out of harms way and under escort.

Applauds to the joint-naval forces for coming to the rescue on time. I think it is about time that harsher measures be taken against the pirates. Present measures are way too lenient.

PLAN in action once again. This time they saved a South Korean vessel from Somalian pirate vessels. Warning shots were fired and since the pirates stopped in their tracks, no further actions were taken.

They just used google translate and the result is horrible!

I'll wait for the official translation from Xinhua or some other news paper.

Though heartless to say, but at the essence, keeping a pretty resource-less and chaotic country like Somalia as-is instead of do something about it, is the cheapest option for all powers alike: think about the political and economical costs to send in peacekeepers to have everybody settle down. There's nothing come from the ground or shore or underneath to recoup the investment.

Secondly, it gives them a viable excuse to maintain a military presence in the waters off Somalia, chances to give their personnel real-world operation and even combat experience...at least that'd be a certain for China, there's nowhere like the waters off the Gulf of Aden to give them real shakedown the new toys they're getting, and operation experience that they'd otherwise never have a chance to earn.

Even the not as capable 054 class have a chance for this...but then again, in this type of mission the ship itself not as matter as much to, say, helicopter and zodiac boats they carry.

The sole Type 51B actually did joined the expedition in April 2009, whereas for the Type 51B are with the North Sea Fleet and North Sea Fleet vessels are still out of the expedition roster, those still filled by South Sea Fleet on most occasions,
