I believe she will remain mostly a training and experimental carrier, not a frontline combatant. The Chinese themselves have always insisted on this.

Our prayers could be answered. According to this source, the local maritime affairs dept. has informed civilian shipping operators that several military exclusion zones are in effect from 3/3/2014 to 3/18/2014. This could indicate that Liaoning is to about to set sail.

Lets not play with words. The Liaoning is now being used as a "training ship". But once she reaches full operational capability she will be as good as any other carrier. As long as there is no war then the Liaoning will remain a training ship. But if there would be a war for any reason she will fight for the Chinese navy.

The Liaoning is out to sea again. Lets hope we can see something new this time from her training. I'm hoping for night ops this time. This is something we haven't seen yet from the Liaoning. In my view they have till the end of the year to get all their ducks in a row. The day that the air wing embarks is getting closer.

When we first encounter a new photo claiming to be new Chinese toy, we must consider 3 fundamental things:
first, is it P'Sed? then, is it Chinese? finally, when and where was it taken?

I thought someone already said they're Chinese .... but Taiwan Chinese not China Chinese :)

Maybe someone with better eyes than me can check this out. Not even sure if they're Chinese but I found it in the Chinese boards saying they're Chinese.

They are Chinese.

But not mainland.

The Republic of China on Taiwan owns and operates six E-2 Hawkeye aircraft. That is the type of aircraft you are seeing here. Two of them.

When the new indigenous Chinese carriers come online, I think the world will see a great deal more of the Liaoning.

I fully expect her to be sent all over the world on missions and for port calls while the indigenous Chinese carriers will be kept mostly close to the Chinese mainland.

So, I would expect the Liaoning to go to Aden, and may even be effectively forward based in the Indian Oceon as a rapid reaction force to deal with any crisis in Africa, ME or the Med.

.

Only if she has some deep uncorrectable flaw in her basic design. Otherwise why not?

I don't think China will ever forward base a carrier strike group like we have at Yokosuka and the USS George Washington CVN-73

Ever is a long time. But for now china has no secure and logistically well supported forward base to base her carrier in. Almost by definition, such a base would need to be established in a pretty highly populated area with considerable population and infrastructure.

Am I right to say that the last time the Liaoning had a long break, that break was followed by her first practice in a fleet formation?

Given her current long break, perhaps the PLAN is planning something again? Perhaps we'll see her deck with more J-15 during her next deployment; the fly boys will no need to fight over the toys... as much?

Yes.

And we are all anxiously hoping that the Liaoning will go to sea with even four J-15s.

I would personally, at this stage, like to see her go out with six J-15s and really start training up larger groups of pilots, and practicing some aircraft tactics, strike packages, etc.

That would be nice to see.
