Hmmm...I wonder if Liaoning will participate this year?

I doubt it, the air wing from the Liaoning is not ready. What's the point of sending her over to drill with Russia other than to compare and contrast for show? The joint sea drill is more likely to hone in their skills from both navies with destroyers, frigates, and possibly submarines, but no carriers involve.

On the other hand, the PLAN is going to have carriers in the Western Pacific.

It will be common place in a few years.

The PLAN has already itself trained with maneuvering drills with the carrier in the South China Sea.

Beginning now with those type of exercises could make since...and particularly if they did embark a few ASW and SAR helos.

They could even send 3-4 J-15s for show.

Send a message.

Ha!

I knew I could find it.

Heck, I knew that the PLAN would probably have at least one of these out there conducting maneuvering drills with the Liaoning and the Type 071 LPD.

Now here is confirmation:

Come on, the Liaoning returned to Qingdao on 1 january it has been 2 months now. Is she still there at port ? Does anyone know if there is a restriction zone being declared in the Bohai Sea ? Or is the Liaoning going out to sea so banal now that the media in China stop reporting on it ? Or are they at port to save money for years end when the air wing embarks ? Once the air wing embarks she will need 4 or 5 months of training then she could go out on patrol but it will still take years before she can actually fight a war.

I believe she will remain mostly a training and experimental carrier, not a frontline combatant. The Chinese themselves have always insisted on this.

Excellent post Franklin. Just like you I want the show to get going! Too much standing around twiddling our thumbs waiting for just a tidbit of news about CV-16. Come on PLAN get that ship underway!

And how about some new photos of what's going on aboard CV-16 PLAN???

Our prayers could be answered. According to this source, the local maritime affairs dept. has informed civilian shipping operators that several military exclusion zones are in effect from 3/3/2014 to 3/18/2014. This could indicate that Liaoning is to about to set sail.

QINGDAO, March 2 (Xinhua) -- China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, Sunday left its homeport of Qingdao in east China's Shandong Province on tests and training missions.

The journey is the first of its kind for Liaoning in 2014 and is part of its yearly tests and training schedule, according to sources with he People's Liberation Army Navy.

The aircraft carrier and its crew have conducted a series of tests and trainings, including landing and takeoff by various aircraft on its deck.

The Liaoning is China's only aircraft carrier in operation. It was refitted based on an unfinished carrier of the former Soviet Union. The refitted carrier was delivered to the navy on Sept. 25, 2012.

Maybe someone with better eyes than me can check this out. Not even sure if they're Chinese but I found it in the Chinese boards saying they're Chinese.

When we first encounter a new photo claiming to be new Chinese toy, we must consider 3 fundamental things:
first, is it P'Sed? then, is it Chinese? finally, when and where was it taken?
