Noticed the discrepancy from the most recent picture and the old one Jeff posted. Differences in the building/track(?) on the bottom right.

We don't know which is actually older. Google maps can be horribly out of date (by two years or more).

True that. The one Jeff posted seems newer, but I don't remember the source and it's been a while since he posted them.

The picture I posted was from the original article that by78 posted earlier today and asked for a translation, which I provided, and that popeye then asked for someone to post the pictures from.

Ah. I thought it was an older pic. If that's the case then the one I linked from you is probably newest one.

Maybe the satellite images show a new test catapult mid-construction. I think they have the actual catapults under shelter of roof.

We had similar pictures of a "dug out" section for the left end of the building before it was covered up. And even now, it appears to be separate from the rest.

I dug up an old article from three years ago on this Mr. Ma Weiming. It states that he was responsible for major breakthroughs in both electric propulsion and electromagnetic launch.

Well this is troubling. I'm skimming through that link and it seems that the first link you posted might be* a rehash of this one. That would make the claims about IEPS and EMALS in the first article you posted 3 years old.

EDIT: False alarm, maybe. The beginning of the article states that in 2010 Mr Weiming was receiving an award and made a speech, which is very similar to how your first article starts off. None of the claims about EMALS and IEPS in the first article were repeated in the second, except that Mr. Weiming is responsible for both, BUT the claims about his experience with China's submarine program is word for word in some places.

Not troubling per se, but why all of sudden is this making the rounds again? Ostensibly it's because the Chinese EMALS breakthrough has made it into Western news in the past week; but this likely baloney, since I've yet to see any recent Western coverage of China's EMALS program.

Then why have the Chinese rehashed this old article now? Are they perhaps implying that their EMALS is finally mature?

But remember Mr. Ma Weiming was also responsible for breakthroughs in IEP. It's possible the Chinese may in fact be suggesting that they now have mature electric propulsion technology for large surface combatants.

Or, maybe China has got both EMALS and IEP nailed.

What I know for sure is that the Chinese have voluntarily rehashed an old article from three years ago, ostensibly due to very recent Western press coverage, which doesn't actually exist. The Chinese maybe telling us something without making an announcement, which can be perceived as too 'aggressive'.

"The West thinks we've done this" is much softer than "look at what we've done".
