Most Mahua I find in Tianjin have sesame :p (the ones I like to eat anyways...).

I'm reading that Mahua is fried in peanut oil? Maybe that's where the nutty flavour comes from (and not the Sesame).

Only on SD where a serious discussion about aircraft carriers get sidetracked into a serious discussion abut Chinese pastries and doughy dessert.. sure it's OT but I'm not complaining because I love food and I love pasties regardless of country of origin!
You guys now make me want to drop by the Asian market in town tomorrow and pick up some chinese danish.. HA! Chinese Danish! lol
I like the Chinese custard thingie.. what do you call that?

Egg tarts. Most of the Chinese doughs and pastries here in the states are Cantonese based. For Northerners half of all the good stuff is missing.

For those who thought it's wrong thread, basically it is not.

We have discovered a common food or rather snack we like called 'Mahua' on the CV-16 gallery photo. This brings back memories of us as small kids living this snack.

I think we could discuss what main course they have onboard... Yummy

Yes, it must have been the sweets?? I'm sure the good food makes the Liaoning a "cherry" assignment, and the accomodations even make bd a little jealous, I'd say the crew is motivated, and that my friend is a real team builder, the old adage here on the new continent is, "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach". Seriously, men who feel like they are being well cared for, are far more likely to do whatever it takes to make sure they maintain that status. I will almost guarantee that the morale on board the Liaoning is the highest in the Chinese Naval Forces, the J-15 squadrons likely match that..... brat.

The berthing for enlisted sailors aboard this ship, CV-16, are superior. Much better than enlisted berthing aboard any USN ship.

I think Steel is thinking about signing up himself, now that the J-15s are in batch production, has anyone "heard" about the progress. I know this does not happen overnight, as we just finished the 100th F-35, but is it possible they have 4 to 6 of the latest batch nearing completion???? I am also making the assumption, that we may see another cruise in early March or April???

Due to this, I'd say that the PLAN is not using an euphemism when they say the Liaoning is a "training and scientific research vessel". In other PLAN vessels, there is much less emphasis on crew luxury and are instead optimised for combat efficiency. Such luxuries are only justifiable if the vessel is intended primarily for a role other than combat.

It seems to me that the PLAN does not intend to put Liaoning in combat and their primary focus is creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for PLAN sailors to learn how to operate a carrier; combat efficiency is a secondary concern. I seriously doubt that the next PLAN carrier would be nearly as well-endowed in crew luxuries as the Liaoning; the next carrier would be a true combat vessel optimised only for combat.

not just enlisted personnel.. the stateroom for officers look much nicer on board the Liaoning as well! I like to go tour the ship one day even if it's 20 years from now when she is no longer new and shiny.

There is no emphasis on luxury. It's just that the Liaoning is very spacious. Among the contributing factors are the removal of Granit launchers, reduction in size of electronics, and automation which results in crew reduction from around 1500 to 1000. The internal arrangement of the ship is fixed so there isn't much the empty space can be used for aside from serving as crew accommodation.
