I just wanted to step out if the lurking shadows to share this story I saw this morning.

Btw-I believe the stagnation we've seen in training and development may have something to do with assessment and adjustment of procedures after Liaoning's recent deployment(s). It certainly would makes sense that some procedures would be tweaked and refined.

As for the pace of the overall program-I think if anything-the Chinese Navy is probably attempting to speed things up. There certainly seems to be a demand for the capabilities of a carrier from the Chinese Navy's civilian policy making customers. It's an open question how much faster they can go.

It says here that China will eventually have 4 carriers. So I'm guessing either two will be at sea for 6 months while the other two in port or 1 carrier at sea for 3 months while the other three in port are the possible rotation scenarios once all 4 of them have their wings ready to go. That way you'll have at least a CBG at sea through out the year. That's great, considering no other country can do year round sea ops with CBG other than the US Navy, maybe the Royal Navy if they can get that second Elizabeth Class carrier fully operation depending on their budget.

4 Aircraft Carriers?

China should be aiming for at least 6 Aircraft Carriers for PLAN-AF. China has plenty of territory to safeguard and needs to maintain a global presence, where ever it's interests lay. Africa is one of many territories where China has significant investment, as is South America. So it is in China's interest that it appropriates for at least 6 Aircraft Carriers.

If china actually needs to use her aircraft carriers to protect her investments in South America, then 6 would hardly be enough. If she uses her carriers only for regional hegemony near china, 4 is probably enough.

I lean towards five.

If they want to be sure have one available at all times for each of their three fleets, then they will need five.

I don't think it really makes a whole lot of sense for them to continue with the three roughly equal operational fleet structure for much longer. The three fleet structure made sense when china had a long coast line to defend, but lacking green or blue water capability it had no depth to its maritime defense, so it can't assure strategic mobility of its forces in time of war, and each sector of its coast would require its own organic coastal defense.

Once china acquire 2-3 operational carriers, the depth of her maritime defence obviously greatly increases, it would make much more sense to combine all of her blue water assets into at most two, preferably one single flexible operational command with responsibility for China's entire maritime frontier.

The 3 fleet structure might survive as peacetime administrative, logistic, reserve, dockyard support entities, but operational command of fleet at sea would concentrate, perhaps in peace time, but perhaps at time of mobilization, into a single structure.

If china adapts this integrated operational command structure, then she would be able to field a pretty powerful single task force of 2 carriers in much of west pacific, able to simultaneously conduct powerful strike operation while providing fleet air cover, with a third able to rotate with deployed carriers to support lengthy deployments, and function as attrition reserve, plus an additional forth vessel undergoing lengthier yard work.

The USN would call this PRI-FLY. i.e. Primary Flight Control. That where the Air Boss works....and shipmates like kwaigonegin.

The food looks so much better than S.O.S.!

You got that right! Never ate S.O.S...never will. Mostly ate bacon, sausage, potatoes & eggs for breakfast.
