A recent clip from the PLAN's 73rd birthday celebration shows 5 captains of various PLAN warships with their grade insignia on display which serves to give us some further insight into the grade levels of different PLAN warships classes.
Aircraft carriers are a Division Leader Grade command, rank held by captain of Liaoning (16) is Senior Captain
Type 055 are a Division Deputy Leader Grade command, rank held by captain of Lahsa (102) is Senior Captain
Type 052D are a Regiment Leader Grade command, rank held by captain of Xining (117) is Captain
Type 901 are a Regiment Leader Grade command, rank held by captain of Hulunhu (901) is Captain
Type 054A are a Regiment Deputy Leader Grade command, rank held by captain of Linyi (547) is Commander
I am making the assumption that captains do not hold a lower grade than political officers and that grades are consistent across warships of the same type but am not sure if this is right. Does anyone know if political officers normally hold the same grade as the captains, and if not, do they hold a higher or lower grade.
For example, though it's quite blurry, this video of the comissioning of Hainan, Dalian and Changzheng-18 seems to show political officers having a higher grade. For example at 2:19 Changzheng-18 captain (RIGHT) is Regiment Leader Grade (purple insignia), whilst political officer (LEFT) is Division Deputy Leader Grade (red insignia). But then following this convention, that would make the political officer of carriers a Deputy Corps Leader Grade position which seems a bit too high.
