i believe it is real, but it was just used as a test bed for balance beam project or something like that. It's not going to enter service from what I know. The Y-7 AEW project is centered around a rotating disc like E-2.
Yeah probably not the Varyag would need a catapult for that me thinks. If true the deal with Ka-31 pretty much confirms that we'll be using helicopters instead of fixed wing.

E-2C type AWACS is consider to big to fly off the deck of varyag.you need a catapult.
remember the Dolittle"s B-25 bomber air raid against tokyo.B-25 encounter difficulty trying fly off the deck of USS Hornet.this is before the introduction of catapult.

another photo on this.

They also have the Z-8 AEW project and a Y-7 AEW project. We could see all of them somehow end up on future carrier or maybe the helos will end up on a future LPH.

A rumor has appeared on CJDBY forum, it said a E-2D liked Y-7 AEW airplane has been made by XAC this year, but it still has not made its maiden flight yet.

They really don't have that kind of technological capability yet imo. The domestic helicopter industry basically takes Western designs they got license production to and make modifications and call them new helicopters. They took S-300 and made it an UAV helicopter a while ago and they also developed U8 UAV helicopter, but that's all I know.

Deino, do we know where these photos were taken, I am wondering whether these helicopters are based at the carrier aviation facility that was under construction on the shore of the Yellow Sea?

Err this could just be shoddy reporting... but...

Pakistan to receive first ZDK-03 AEW&C aircraft
By Greg Waldron

Pakistan will receive the first of four Shaanxi ZDK-03 airborne early warning and control system aircraft by the end of January 2011.

The other three aircraft are likely to arrive later in the year, says the Pakistan air force.

"The ZDK-03s have been developed to our specifications," says the air force. "It won't be an E-3C Sentry, but it will have the latest electronics and everything an AEW&C aircraft needs."

The Chinese-built aircraft will have an active electronically scanned array radar, and its open architecture electronics will allow for future developments and upgrades.

Pakistan has also received its third of four Erieye radar-equipped Saab 2000s being acquired from Sweden, with the final aircraft likely to arrive in the coming months. The four-engined Chinese aircraft has a greater range than the Saab, say sources.

The ZDK-03 deal underlines the strong military ties between Pakistan and China. The countries have also jointly developed the Chengdu JF-17 Thunder fighter, of which Pakistan is likely to buy 200.

Purchasing AEW&C aircraft from two separate sources is indicative of Pakistan's strategy of not becoming too reliant on any one ally. The USA imposed military sanctions against Islamabad from 1990 until 2005 in response to its testing nuclear weapons.

The air force's current fleet includes Lockheed Martin F-16s, Dassault Mirage III/5s and Chengdu F-7s and JF-17s.

In terms of military transports, Pakistan flies Lockheed C-130s, but also operates Ilyushin Il-76/78 tankers.

Has anyone actually confirmed if the radar isn't AESA? Because there are a number of AESA radars which are put on rotating platforms (SAMPSON, and the EF-2000's AESA whose name escapes me), and something could be similar the ZDK-03s radar...
Just saying, but it's probably a case of bad reporting.
