Moving on, I wanna talk about a somewhat tragic character in ping pong, Japan's Kasumi Ishikawa. Of the non-Chinese players, she's my favorite by far. She's beautiful, trained in China with fluent Chinese, and was ranked as high as 3rd at the peak of her career, holding down the position of Captain of the Japanese Women's Team. Her nickname is the Pure Girl because of her crisp and innocent expressions. She's 30 now and retired after failing to qualify for Paris. She's very popular in Japan and China and has many sponsorships and gigs so everything actually looks great for her life and future... except for one thing: she loves Ma Long.

She has said that she always admired his prowess as a fan, but when she first laid eyes on him in person, she was awestruck by how handsome and cool he was. However as fortune would have it, Ma Long had a steady girlfriend, whom he would come to marry and have a son with. After Kasumi's retirement, Japanese TV shows interviewed her asking if she is ready for dating and marriage. She said sure, and she has many suitors but she thinks it will be hard for her because eversince she was in elementary school, playing ping pong at an elite level has made her naturally look for others' weaknesses while hiding her own. She says this trait is highly unsuitable for a relationship. For Paris, she came to see Ma Long train and win his last gold medal. When she went to see him afterwards to give him a congratulatory pin which she gave to every Chinese ping pong team member, he accepted it and left with a gleeful smile as that between great friends. But her expression on camera turned to that of sadness for several moments after he was gone. How is this girl to get married? What man, who can meet the standards of a rich and beautiful celebrity who was also a table tennis champion and 3 time Olympic medalist, can tolerate marrying a woman known as the lady who loves Ma Long? What a story it would have been if the Captain of China's Table Tennis Men's Team married the Captain of Japan's Table Tennis Women's team...

Kasumi Ishikawa and Tomokazu Harimoto visited Togo shrine, which honoured Japanese war criminals right before the Paris Olympics. I think she's pretty cute, but she may not be as pure as you think. The whole Chinese PingPong team basically unfollowed those two on weibo today.

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shit...

Edit: I've never heard of Togo Shrine before. It's not the same as Yasukuni. I couldn't get a straight answer from Google as to what war criminal is honored there but the shrine is named after Togo Heihachiro, who defeated Russia's navy in the Russo-Japanese War, which is a fair naval fight, not a war crime. Are there really war criminals from WWII honored there?

It was one of the shrines name and shamed by CCTV before. Togo was an OG war criminal from the first Sino Japanese war.

Hina Hayata is also basically cancelled in China cause she just gave an interview about wanting to visit Kamakazi museum right after the Paris Olympics.

I'm gonna lean towards believing the Chinese media on whatever shrine sucks but I'm not 100% sure because I'm researching Togo Heihachiro (not to be confused with Togo Shigenori) and I see that he did a lot of damage to China in the Sino-Japanese war, especially during the Battle of Yalu but I'm not seeing yet what qualifies him as a war criminal. Did he order civilian executions? Set up comfort houses? Order human experimentation? What makes him a war criminal rather than a powerful enemy?

It's at the point where I wouldn't expect a Japanese person even with strong ties to China to understand the sensitivies because even I don't understand them and I've been on Google for half an hour trying to figure out if I can allow myself to stay a Kasumi Ishikawa fan!

Massacred Chinese sailors after they fell in the water. Massacred Chinese ppl on taiwan. Massacred Boxers. A fanatic warmonger, basically OG Japanese war criminal. I mean she is cute and probably doesn't know any better, but those three athletes are basically cancelled in China. Ma Long also unfollowed her today.

Ma Long's split with her is really sad. It's very plausible that she didn't know what she was doing; I'd let her have a word on this before making a decision.

If I were visiting Japan and some people said let's go visit a beautiful shrine, I'd make sure it wasn't the Yasukuni but other than that, I could have went to check it out. I would have no idea that it was CCTV shamed and wouldn't even think to look to pre-WWII for Japanese war criminals. I don't wanna go back home to find that people burned down my house and flipped my car; a quick explanation would have cleared it up.

I think the problem isn't just visiting the shrine, but honoring the dead people there. Kasumi Ishikawa and Tomokazu Harimoto prayed in front of the shrine. Maybe they didn't really care much and just treat it as a ritual but Chinese people have a reason to be pissed. There is a reason why the Japanese TV station filmed those two praying at that shrine, it definitely wasn't just a coincidence.
