I thought the IOC has the final say on what sports are to be included, and one criteria is that the sport must have a global reach. So American football would be a no-go. The IOC says:I must say very very unlikely because the host can actually choose sport that have advantage for them. Imagine they have american football, baseball, squash, or another dozen variations of running then the Chinese have no way to compete.
"The Olympic Charter indicates that in order to be accepted, a sport must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents and by women in no fewer than 40 countries and on three continents."
